AS mentioned above, the routine does restrict us a bit, we don't go out as a family in the evening, but it works for us.
It's pretty normal not to go out in the evenings as new parents...?

We used to go out a bit in the evenings, kiddo would sleep quite well in a noisy pub, so it is possible.

Routine is nowhere near as restrictive as not having a clue what the kid is going to cry about next or when though. Wouldn't swap a routine for any amount of going out in the evenings, no chance.

Just returned from a week in Majorca, Little Man got fked over by our flight times and crap transfer and finally went to sleep at 1am. We then had an absolute nightmare of him waking at 1am and not going back to sleep until 5, wide awake, time to play, running round like a monkey. Awful! After two days of this I replaced everything that was missing from his routine, put him in complete darkness and put him in the living space of the apartment so he was on his own if he woke and he went straight back to sleeping 7 to 6. Bliss.

As above, the first few months we would go out for meals, or to see grandparents, just making sure everything fitted in between the 3 hourly feeds. Now we just go out for lunch, rather than dinner.

I must be very lucky with my little boy, he is coming up to 5 months, and goes to bed at 19:00ish and either wakes up around 4:00, but once or twice a week sleeps through until 6:00.

We moved him out of the moses basket in our room at 6 weeks old, as none of us were getting much sleep, he seemed to love the extra space in his cot and started sleeping much better.

We start his bedtime routine at 18:00, with a bath, then draw he black out curtains in his room and just leave the light from the landing coming in, give him his bottle - by this time he is normally dosing off, but burping him and putting him in his cot wakes him up. One, or both of us stay in his room with him until he has drifted off, sometimes he needs an extra cuddle or a story read to him. Other times he gets really upset, probably due to being too tired and we give him a dummy, this usually sends him straight to sleep (dummy is removed before we leave the room). AS mentioned above, the routine does restrict us a bit, we don't go out as a family in the evening, but it works for us.
I guess it was to be expected that after writing this we had our worst night for a few months. He went down easily, but woke up at 3, then every 20 minutes or so after - just as we were about getting back to sleep.
