Hi all, a couple of months ago I left my job which had an onsite gym which I took advantage of 5 days a week. I was doing the 5x5 plan (if I could get on the bench and rack).

So I''m now in the situation where I need to get some things for a home gym. I'm only doing press ups at the moment.

So what should I get do you think? I need a bar clearly, but what size? Olympic or 1"plates? I do have some 1"plates actually, so if I could get away with a narrow bar then that would be good. I need a bench I guess? Do I need bench press stands or a proper rack?

Ido enough running and cycling for my cardio I think, but don't want to get skinny fat.

Thanks all.

How much space do you have?

If limited on space get a pull-up bar and a set of dumbbells / resistance bands. I currently use resistance bands and the pull-up bar while moving house and you can still get a decent workout

If a decent amount of space get a power cage, Olympic weights set and a weighs bench.

I was in a similar position last year and converted my single garage into a gym. I used eBay and Fitness Superstore for stuff. I have: flat bench, stands (squat racks) with spotter bits, pull up bar (wide one from Amazon), 120kg of Olympic plates, Olympic dumbbell and barbells, cross trainer, weight plate racks. Lighting is an LED li-ion rechargeable lamp. Music by IPad.

This sort of thing is good:

If you've got the space and the funds this would do very nicely. Don't underestimate space requirements as obviously bench has to pull right out for squats

The lat/low pulley attachment is surplus to requirements for 5x5

2 inch olympic bar is the way to go

100% if you have enough room and money, go full on power cage and olympic bars - that's my wish list. I so wouldn't have to go to the gym full of weirdos wanting to 'give me tips' or tell me that it's amazing a girl lifts...

Full power cage for sure, with spotters. If you keep at it, you will realise that this is the only way to go to stay safe as the weight increases. Individual stand-alone stands can be very dangerous - I know because I wasted money buying a pair..

I picked my rack up from powerhouse fitness duringg the Black Friday sales last year. If you call they can often do a better deal. If you pay cash (or credit card) and don't go for the 0% offer it's even easier to get a deal. I added some extra 25kg plates to one of the packages along with the cf475 I think.

Depending on how much room you have and where it's going you can also make your own platform for a few quid. Here's mine just after setup:

This completely depends what exercises or weights you want to do - that should be your starting point. We have a home gym and have a bench, free weights, matts, a chin up bar, TRX and a turbo trainer for our bikes, but that's just what suits us and what we want to do; everyone will be different.

For the weights, consider spending a bit more on Rubber Plates.

Also if space/time is at a premium, adjustable dumbbells may worth the outley.

I don't think I've ever seen a girl lift at the gym. Most are walking on the treadmill taking selfies......saying that the men are the same hehe

hehe

I have seen some women at the last gym I worked at doing stuff like squats and deadlifts with challenging loads but mostly the women are waving 1kg dumbbells around.

Which is annoying because it's the DBs I like to use for squats. wink

I know, it's just tiring because all you want is to get through your sets and go home. Imagine working out and someone tries to have a full on conversation with you. But worse!

If you didn't take a selfie - the workout never happened!

You mean, imagine women chatting me up in the gym? Where do I sign up?

They lift at my gym, ive seen women doing 5x5, but most don't break a sweat or build a nest of equipment.

Anyone near Sussex, I have a full squat cage, bench and Olympic barbell set going cheap...

Mrs has decided that she wants the garage for a studio, and I've found a bloody awesome lifting gym near my new work.
