I received my white belt 4th stripe last night, now to start honing everything ready for the blue test in a couple of months. Hoping to hit a few competitions as well before blue but it all hinges on my work schedule at the moment.
congratulations that's good progress for training just over a year. Modern coaching is so much better than when I first started, guys training a year now are typically better than I was after 2 yearsThank you , it's dropped a little lately but that's an average of 2 x 3hr and 1 x 1hr p/week broken down into 3hr of fundamentals and 4hr of 'advanced'.
We have some very tough blues in the club, compared against those I'm no where near ready but comparing myself against a couple of tournament competitors who have been promoted after the comp I'm in the ballpark. I'll keep turning up and get there eventually!

7 hrs a week is a fair amount to be committing to BJJ, no wonder you've progressed so quickly. I get about 10 hours per week in but that's across the whole MMA spectrum, means you end up being decent at most things but not really exceptional at anything, I also get about 4 hours a week in for strength & conditioning so between the different types of training and work it doesn't leave a lot of time for much else, easy to see why so many people don't stick at it
Had a terrible training session last night, was pouring with sweat before had finished the warm-up and was totally gassed after the first bit of sparring, I'm hoping it's just fatigue due to me cutting my calories to get down to weight in a few weeks and upping the intensity of training

I know that feeling, I'm also cutting. Training and running a calorie deficit is tough on the body and mind.
In addition to my BJJ I do an approximately an hour and 15 in the gym most mornings, split between lifting and conditioning. Recently theres been more focus on conditioning so lots of skipping, sled push/pull, rope work, HIIT etc. Fed up of competing ultra heavy, hoping to drop into the 95 - 100kg category.

My lad got his first stripe tonight, started mid December but has done a couple of years on and off at Japanese and ground fighting at karate. He loves it and has learned loads, there really is a brilliant culture at the club right from the kids through to the professor. Everybody seems to genuinely want to see everybody else to improve, after a bit of sparring tonight the lad who'd been rolling with my lad (also 10) was giving him feedback of what he did well and what to watch out for. Great atmosphere round the place and people thrive.

Thread's gone quiet for a while so I thought I'd post the a quick vid of the best in the world vs somebody who is clearly no mug. Not strictly to do with health, but ever so slightly humbling nonetheless... So much going on in this video beyond the obvious. A joy to watch. Been on the wrong side of this too many times

That question mark kick (or whatever you want to call it) freaks me out, I don't even see how it's possible, makes my hips, knees and brain hurt just watching it.https://www.instagram.com/p/BPaB9belKrB/?taken-by=...

My son has been training in kickboxing for around 5 months now, he's only 8, and small for his age but he's at a good club that I'm happy with.
Sometimes I fancy a go myself (with the adults obviously ) but I turned 39 the other day and not trained for 20 years so as much as I'd enjoy it I don't think my body is up to it

Just do it man, I'm 40, I went back to kick boxing and boxing a couple of years ago after 10 years doing other martial arts and am absolutely loving it - I don't compete but spar with lads that do regularly, you can't really beat the feeling of getting your arse handed to you by someone 20 years younger.
+1 But every now and again you'll catch the skinny little bds!No seriously, it's either do this or run on a treadmill or something equally tedious (or heaven forbid get a road bike!). I'm 41 and things have changed a lot in 20 years, gyms are a lot more fun (in a masochistic kind of a way) and the dhead ratio is down. Just find one you're comfortable with and go in with nothing to prove. You'll love it.
Just a quick update on how my Martial Arts is going this year, I ended up on a few days notice taking the San Shou fight against a different opponent, unfortunately this meant me having to lose an extra 3kg and then fight the undefeated champion, as this isn't a TV show where these kind of event turn into a fairytale I took a right beating and lost by TKO in the third, once there's a proper video available I'll share it. Really enjoyed the fight though, was great fun
Tonight I'm attending a BJJ seminar with Ben Poppleton which should be good, the first time I got truly mauled in a grappling match was by one of his students so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can learn, though to be honest my Gi knowledge is so small he could show me pretty much anything and it would be a revelation to me

The Ben Poppleton seminar was awesome, learnt a lot of detail about finishing the arm bar, will need to drill it an awful lot though for me to become truly effective at it. I've never won an MMA or grappling match by any sort of joint lock, all have been chokes, I'm hoping if I can get this technique nailed it will open up a new dimension to my game. Also got awarded my blue belt which was nice, part of me doesn't feel worthy of it as I've only done BJJ for 6 months so am not fully skilled on the basics but I guess my 10 years of no-gi & wrestling helps compensate in other areas
Blue belt promotion, awesome! Your instructor obviously thinks you're ready, don't do yourself an injustice. I bet every blue belt promoted feels the same way (I know I would at the minute, even though I'm getting ready for the test).
From what I hear Ben is mega, super experienced and had the opportunity to train under some of the greats, one day I'd like to attend his training camp abroad.
I was away with work this week staying in Basildon, managed to get 2 classes in at Lamude BJJ, really enjoyed it and will go again when I'm next down that way. Found it great to get some rolls in outside of my club against guys who don't know my game (and I don't know theirs!). Think I did ok, didn't get subbed by the blues, although the brown belt instructor toyed with me then subbed me EASILY haha.

I started Combat Hapkido a few months ago.
Still very much a white belt novice, the only white belt there and possibly their oldest new starter ever haha.
Combat Hap is a Korean self-defence orientated martial art, and borrows bits from Karate, TKD, BJJ, Muay Thai, Judo, etc. Combines kicks, strikes, throws, ground work and arm / wrist locks.
There is fancy stuff like spinning back heel kicks (already decided I am never going to use them as I am st at them) and nasty stuff like throat punches, arm / wrist breaking.
It is good fun, and as well as the skills there is a fearsome stretching / fitness aspect too.

I got my first stripe on the white belt (Gracie Barra BJJ)a couple of weeks ago, and this week whilst drilling the guard I didn't feel completely lost for the first time. Only positional sparring but set myself a goal of not tapping out or getting swept from the top and not tapping out and sweeping from the bottom, managed to prevent my guard from being passed and started to figure out how it doesn't need to be locked tight if you have good grips and almost got a sub with the cross collar choke but didn't get quite deep enough to get it before time.
