The tough love wont really work to be honest, all it'll do is be divisive and it's showing that whoever dealt it either cant or wont understand the problem the guy has (in his case, he think people are spying on him).

If you put it another way, imagine trying to tell someone who has bronchitis to stop bloody coughing. They cant. Not until they get the help they need to make it stop.

I think either you accept it (the possible spying, with an outcome of 'hope you can get to the bottom of it') or embrace it and buy him a cheap bug detector off eBay so he can sweep the place morning and night to be sure. I dont know which if any would actually help and I'm not sure feeding the paranoia is the right call, but I dont think the shouty shouty would really do anything for anyone.

Just to add a short note.

Paul is spot on with his suggestions. The procedures will all be the least restrictive, the last thing anyone wants is to have a long term patient who becomes institutionalised. So they will work out what medication he requires to balance the paranoid delusional thoughts & any associated behaviour and then work towards discharging him.

It is tough for the relatives & friends, a lot of focus is put on the person who is sectioned & occasionally the people around that person get forgotten about, so if I can help you at all do drop me an email via the forum. Im an psychiatric nursing student & have worked in the field for the past 3 years.
