Had full check up and discovered something new - obviously some dentists (this one anyway) getting peed off with the hygienist side, she said my teeth needed a bit of a descale - and said she herself was quite happy and willing to do it if I wished, or I could book to see an hygienist - for 55 quid!
I asked her 'how much will you charge me?'
'Nothing, I'll include it', she replied.
So, full inspection, x-rays, and clean, for 22 quid. No brainer!

So, bit like the old days when the first thing a dentist did was to give your teeth a clean. Then it changed, and from somewhere came the hygienists.
Is it changing back?
Ours doesn't offer a choice - if you want your teeth cleaned you go to the hygienist. The drill (no pun intended) now is to see the hygienist, then have a check up. You're probably in the chair 3 mins and she's looking in your mouth for 1 minute of that. We know other people who go and she's the same with them.

Do these hygienists use the same ultrasonic tool that the dentists use which strips all the enamel off your teeth leaving you in excruciating pain for weeks afterwards? Or do they clean the crud manually with the pointy hook thing?

My wife’s dentist has just bought an RS7 c/w private number plate. That’s solely from NHS work.
£400 per month on the chucky does not mean that NHS dental work pays well.
He runs his own practice (AIUI he has 2 clinics so there are other dentists employed there as well). I’d be surprised if it was less than £100k pa.

In 1970 aged 10, mum took me to the NHS dentist up the road as she thought I had an abscess.
The dentist removed one of my front adult front teeth and said I could have a denture, age 10.
8 year later a bridge, fast forward 40 years to the top of this thread.

Several have asked where I went, I didn’t post it as I started the post just as how how it went for me not an advert for the dentist, but I went to the “Dental centre Turkey” in Antalya.
That's because in the 70s the NHS dentist would get paid for all that work hence the impetus to do more work in your mouth. I have a chum who was a dentist in the 70s and then changed profession. He said it was rife and one dentist even had 3 chairs in his surgery working on all 3 at once. You could hardly see them from the amount of amalgam dust in the air!

My pals mum got called into her dentist surgery unexpected and ended up with a filling she didn't need, just ahead of a visit by a government inspector. Some were claiming for work they had never done!

Thanks for the tip, I'll look it up and keep us updated as to progress.

As a UK trained dentist placing a fair few implants, I’m not going to bore you all with why we charge what we do, as I’ve covered it many a time in previous posts. All I’d say is don’t go abroad. I see and treat a lot of implant failures..some from the UK and some from abroad. The skill and planning required to place an implant correctly with the appropriate type, size, timing, soft and hard tissue grafting is immense. Something lost on many of our Turkish counterparts unfortunately. Once they’re in, and you have a problem, it’s seriously big bucks to rectify and quite often lots of precious hard and soft tissue is lost too. You’ve been warned.

Do you drive an RS7 with a personal plate, making more than £100k / year?
I'm asking for a friend. wink

There are loads of videos of 'influencers' going to Turkey - usually young people in their 20's or 30's as a previous person said. I think the issue there is that they are grinding down working teeth for aesthetics - which may become a pain in 5-10 years.

If you are interested you can watch people showing the whole process.

Interesting, my teeth aren’t great and couple of implants will soon be required. Going abroad hadn’t even came to mind...

I'm having another extraction next month (to bring the total to 5 for the year) and then having a couple of implants to start with in January

It will cost a fortune (to me), but I wouldn't go abroad as I would be one of those who have a nightmare job and it all goes pear-shaped.

I know my dentist is one of the top men (women are also available) in the country and a 10 minute walk away so if I have any issues, it's close-by.

Hi all only read a few posts but a heads up over the years an nhs dentist I guess systematically ruined my teeth ........so researched found a Hungarian dental team that had a surgery in London also. That was important to me if anything went wrong

So 1 root canal 1 bone graph 2 bridges 5 implants and 24 crowns plus a system to make sure my jaw was positioned properly name I forget a few london visits and 2 x 2 days trips to Hungary

Cost including flights and hotel £13,000 yep £13,000 saw a post on here from someone whose 1 implant cost £3000

..and a couple of dentists I know said they did a great job.

If your NHS dentist was negligent, why did you go for the cheap fix? Surely the claim would have covered treatment in the UK?

Does anyone have experience of Periodontal treatment abroad. The local specialists want £1600 for a "deep clean".

Back to Turkey Monday to have the teeth finished, long delay caused by covid.
All I can say is the tempory teeth have been great, I was worried they would come loose.
They have asked me to book for 2 weeks so a lot more work to be done.
I'll update how it goes.
