Well, saw the nurse this morning and was diagnosed as pre diabetic and told to stop eating cakes, sweets and biscuits. Said I clearly didn't need to lose weight, just lay off the sugary stuff and come back in 12 months for a follow up.
Try sticking to 8am to 5pm consumption too.

Outside that nothing except water/non sugary teas etc.

There isn’t anything wrong with a cake etc, but all in moderation... I’ve had 3 small slices the last few days for daughters 2nd birthday, but that’s it... keep sugary stuff to actual treats/occasions/once a week after a nice Sunday lunch etc.

Reviving this thread after receiving a text from the doctor telling me my recent blood test has indicated marginally raised hbA1c. Says I have pre-diabetes and to follow a link they included in the text. I’m not overweight, reasonably fit and thought I had a good mixed diet so rather surprised. I have an appointment next week to discuss my hernia so will definitely be asking for more detail on the blood test to understand how serious the results are.

Don't worry too much, until you know the level and specialists have given advice. It might be nothing, it might need a subtle change in diet....just one daily change could make all the difference.

That one choccy bar each day? One dessert each day....a large fruit juice with breakfast each morning?

Thanks Mike, I’ve been lucky and never had to look at any form of diet over the years as I’m relatively active and do most things in moderation.

I guess that since COVID and more wfh I might have slipped into some poorer habits without realising. I’m just the wrong side of 60 and my recent hernia was a shock so maybe it’s time to start taking a more pro-active approach to my health.

Sticks.

There's a number of reports saying vitamin D helps prevent it becoming T2 diabetes. Have a Google.

With what you say about your activity and weight, a fairly simple change could make the difference. My dad reversed a T2 diagnosis with some minor bad habits being taken out his diet. He was similarly active and not overweight, but liked my mums desserts and always had sugar on his breakfast cereal....... I am T1 so no hope for me.......

Well I saw the doctor today and she told my number was 44 - 41 is 'normal' and 48 is diabetic.

She agreed I'm far from overweight and suggested I look at diet but not to be overly concerned, she mentioned Michael Mosley does some interesting stuff around diabetes and I've listened to a few of his podcasts in the past so think I'll start there having read most of this thread over the last few weeks.

I am back down to pre-diabetic (just!) with a reading of 42, in May I had the shock of my life when I was told that my readings had gone from 45 to 68 in just over 4 months and my triglycerides and cholesterol reading were equally bad. Did some research and decided to undertake a time restricted eating regime whereby I fast for 18 hours and eat during the remaining 6 hours, I lost about 10kgs in the first 6 weeks of doing it. My last blood test at the end of September showed my HbA1c reading of 42 and my triglycerides and cholesterol were completely normal. My diet is now very low carb (30g or less per day) and high fat. I'm continuing on with the diet until at least next May to see if any more improvements can be made and I will have a "private" HbA1c and cholesterol test in December to see what progress has been made.

Take a look at what Dr David Unwin and his wife are doing this area. It’s really easy to understand and they are delivering life changes for people.

I'm not pre-diabetic anymore. Tbh, I didn't change my habits much between the two results.

Any other background to this?? Or are you suggesting your diagnosis was incorrect??

Well I had a follow-up blood test after 3 months and my HbA1c has dropped from 44 to 39 so just below pre-diabetic range which I’m really pleased about.

The only conscious effort I’ve made is to reduce my chocolate/cake/ice cream intake which has always been pretty high. The ice cream habit is gonna be harder during the summer frown
