This thread seems pretty quiet, so thought I'd throw myself in here.
I'm 30 years old, always been a big lad, useless at sport so rarely play any, and have got progressively bigger since I was 18 and upped sticks off to university.
I've been in a relationship now for just over a year, and feel very self concious about my body, and nudity around my partner. So as most of the nation do, it's my New Years resolution to shift it. Previously, I led a very unhealthy lifestyle - company director, so sat on my arse all day, go for beers after work most nights, drink and home, drink at weekends, and eat home cooked food, all freshly prepared but on the James Martin school of 'a big knob of butter, and some cream'.
So... starting stats. I'm 30 years old, 6ft5, and I weighed 20st 7.5lb as of Saturday 4th Jan.
I've bought a set of scales, cut out the booze entirely, healthy eating, and I've joined the gym (and have been twice!). It's a big lifestyle shift, but it's going to be worth it.
Target weight is 16st, so 4st 7.5lbs to shed. It's going to be a long haul, but happy to share it with you all.

While I reckon you could add a bit to your target, it is probably at least as much about the mirror as the scales, certainly in the longer term. There's also a strong element of what time period you're looking to do this over, your willpower/determination and how you do it. I guess you could also chuck in outside pressures, which not everyone believes exists (e.g. what comes with the job, or family, or health, or other circumstances).
Biggest things in my experience were hitting the personal point of no return, finding what worked for me, some initial determination and then seeing results, which reinforces the cycle. Oh, and don't ever, ever buy into a diet. Cheesy as it is, it really has to be a lifestyle change rather than a diet, a little like a recovering alky or ex smoker.
I'm a few inches shorter and was older when I started, but weighed only a few pounds less at peak (damn you rock & roll lifestyle, damn you Father Time ). However, admittedly over a period measured in years rather than months (no gym, no quitting the booze), I did manage to get into three figures in terms of pounds lost until a particularly heavy Christmas period & needed break came to spoil the party. Now trying to get back on the wagon and hit final target A. Then comes the probably more painful B .
What's your new diet and what are you trying to do in the couple of visits to the gym?
Finally, I would add that there are some knowledgeable and helpful people around here, if occasionally not 100% tuned into lesser goals, so worth fishing around the various posts and picking up on the salient bits, as I have.

This morning was week one weigh in, and I'm -5.25lb.
I'm woefully unfit, so at the minute, just doing some cardio exercise to try and build up some fitness, and promote weight loss. Once I'm a bit fitter, I can move onto strength training to improve muscle and core strength. That was my plan anyway!
Not on any specific diet... but my daily routine used to consist of skipping breakfast (or toast smothered in butter and marmite at the weekend), rolls for lunch, and then a home cooked meal, but as I said above, on the James Martin philosophy of lots of butter and cream! I ate out a lot too, and went to the pub 4-5 times a week, plus drinking at home. Oh and I was addicted to Starbucks.
Now, I'm cereal for breakfast, crisp breads (Ryvita) and cottage cheese for lunch, with some fruit, then a sensible dinner. Booze has been cut out, coffee has been cut out, but I've still eaten out a lot, three times this week, just been sensible about it.
I have to say, I really do feel so much better for it, even after only a week.

Good going Dr Interceptor. Similar to what was posted previously, I'm not going for xyz diet, diets just aren't sustainable over years, needs to be a lifestyle change. So far I've just cut down my energy drinks and specifically the early morning can on the way to work.
Next week, exercise starts!

Back on the 5:2 diet after weight creeping up over the last couple of months. Started at 111kg, got down to 80kg (where I like to be) but have recently crept back up to around 85kg. Couple of months on 5:2 and a decent amount of exercise should sort it out.

On the food front, I reckon I'd change the lunch to a chicken salad (or other meat/fish) and breakfast could also be something like poached or scrambled egg on wholemeal toast. Mind you, I do cereal as well, if for no other reasons than ease/lack of time/early morning zombie.
On the evening meal front, the two things will be what you eat and portion size - always a killer.
Using something like My Fitness Pal might be handy and somewhat enlightening (if you're 100% honest). Certainly helped me.
Thanks again folks
Yup cereal is a godsend when you like the snooze button as much as I do, it's quick and easy, and it does actually fill me up till lunch.
I'm using MyFitnessPal, it really is a terrific little app, can't believe it's free really.
It has been a slow week this week. I'm stuck on a number, my body seems determined not to dip below 20st, despite best efforts It's like trying to break 90 in Golf.

I've migrated to MyFitnessPal after always using the LiveStrong app. Find MFP has a better array of UK brand foods in it and less of their nonsense measures [seriously, wtf is a cup or fluid ounce to anyone born after 1970?!]
I've set myself an aggressive target calorie wise and it seems to be paying off, weigh in this morning was 88.8kg making a total of 3.6kg dropped this year.
Changes:
- making myself get out the office and walk at least 20mins quick step at lunch, freshens me up as well as burning a decent amount of calories at 3.5-4mph
- quit energy drinks having fallen in to a habbit of 2 500ml rockstars a day and worse, a morning redbull on the way to work followed by a fatty roll'n'sausage when I got to work
- PhD Diet Whey for breakfast, effectively meaning I can have breakfast on the way to work and its under 200 calories

Weigh in day today... It's a big day, as I've hopefully said goodbye to the 20's forever
19st 12lb, so that's a little over 4lb loss for the week, and 9.5lb so far.

Well done guys
Hi all I have put one weight however have had a massive life change (retired) and now have more time to devote to getting fit and hopefully weighing less. I am at the gym 5 days a week for approx 45min a day doing cardio and already feel a lot better albeit not lost much ( yet! ) I start with a PT from next Monday who is working on diet with me, life change not short term. 2014 is my year to change and I would like to get down to 100kg so nearly 60kg to lose this year it's gonna be tough. But I have to do this for my kids.

Best of luck with that! I'll be adding my name to the list in when I can weigh myself properly. Slowly put on weight in the 2 1/2 years after leaving uni until I'm at about 120/125kg (from 95kg). About time I faced it.

Well after starting my new job I managed to undo all the good work i did in the summer and crept back up to 101kg. Started again on Monday watching what I eat and going running more. Managed to lose nearly 3kg since Monday. I'm aiming for around 82kg so a little bit of work to do. I'm aiming to be 82kg by the end of april.

Unfortunately the easy weight has gone and calorie reduction generated loss is slowing. Been doing quite well at getting out and walking on my lunch breaks which has helped.
Found that walking to the post office to mail car parts can be achieved in 35mins, including dealing with the queue. The actual walk is 2 miles exactly with a lovely hill all the way there
Looks like I'm going to have to start some form of other exercise, all joking aside, the massive calorie defecit is wearing thin, need to start eating what I would call properly again and just up the exercise to keep the net the same.

I'm finding the same, I will be nearly at the 1 stone mark come tomorrow mornings weigh in, which I'm happy with for three weeks effort - but it's getting harder now. The weight is shifting much more slowly. I've found little things help though... If I'm going to a restaurant I'll look at their menu online - most places will show the calories online, where they don't on the in house paper menu.
The gym has helped immensely too... I don't enjoy it, see it as more of a necessary evil - but it helps. Going in and burning off 500 cals on a cardio sesh help balance out what you've eaten during the day.
