Watching the hairy bikers 'Hairy dieters' programme. They've set themselves a 1200cal daily limit. Isn't this abit low? I'm not sure how how much exercise/active they are. But this strikes me as something someone sedentry would do?

That's pretty much exactly my calorie target at the moment and it's tough. I'm having to walk a couple of miles at lunch to hit my target at the moment, more work needed on cutting out sugary drinks and other carbs.

The 1200 figure is hard, but do-able... Cereal breakfast, Ryvitas lunch, fruit for snacks, and a sub 600 calorie evening meal like Chicken stir-fry will see you there. But yes, no fizzy drinks, no beers, no fun.

I'm taking around 1600-700 per day currently... that allows for the odd frivolity like a bag of sunbites.

Down 3.6kg on the week, 15.5 kg to go! Could probably lose faster by going on one of those diets but instead i'm cutting down on what I eat to make it a permanent change.

That's my thoughts. each to their own I guess. i'll re-sign up to the gym when i look to lose the weight. Would much rather lift/cardio 3x a week and be able to eat 2000cals and enjoy myself, then eat very little and exercise very little.

Greetings chaps. I figured I would join in on here as I'm attempting to lose a few kg's properly for once. I'm 26 and I'd describe my build as tubby. Aiming to lose around 10 kilos and replace by gut with some muscle mass. I've been a member at my gym for nearly 4 years now. My job involves sitting behind a desk and working for an online takeaway ordering company really doesn't help matters as I'm always thinking about food.

I've spent far too much time and money on takeaways, my posts on the DTP thread will prove this. I've started using the myfitnesspal app in an attempt to monitor what I eat. Only 3 days in and I'm starting to get into it properly, its quite interesting to see how much I'm eating in terms of calories etc. I've been set a max of 1700 calories by the app based on my current weight, height and how much I want to lose. Managed to come in at 1200 so far per day by behaving myself. Not sure how long it will last but I'll be giving it my best shot as I've run out excuses now.

Edit, my BMI is currently 27.6, hoping to get it closer to 24.

Good to have another in here... I'm pretty new to this too, coming up 1 month in. The MyFitness Pal app is good, and if you eat the 1700 per day, and exercise, the weight will come off.

When I started, I tried a lower calorie intake (similar to your 1200), but found it didn't do me any good - I always had cold fingers and headaches. Yes, the weight fell off at 5lb a week, but I feel much healthier eating the 1700, or 1800 in my case, exercising 3 or 4 times a week, and losing 3lb a week.

Getting close to my first stone being shed.

With respect to 1200cal intake. Yes, I don't disagree it's not long term sustainable and I'm a strong believer in sustainable change. I'm looking to up the exercise and move to 1600-1800 in February. Getting more in the habit now of having salads with chicken for lunch which is a big step, if I don't have time in the morning to make something I'm forcing myself to walk to Subway instead of hitting the work canteen. 400cal 6in sub with salad is better than mac'n'cheese for certain!

I didn't intentionally set out to stay around 1200 cals on my first day. I just ate what I would normally (but removed the usual takeaway) and found my total was 1200. Day two was the same again. Yesterday was a struggle as it was my first gym trip since I started using myfitnesspal. Ended up having to snack on some fruit later on in the day as I was starving. I allowed myself a "treat" of a can of 7 up and half a portion of fries with my dinner tonight.

Using the website and app has made me understand more about wasted calories and all the food that I would normally reach for that is high in calories but not very filling. In the long term I will be aiming for 1500-1700 tops, especially on days when I get to the gym and have a good workout but it seems on an average day around 1200 is enough for me to feel full without being peckish or feeling lousy. Early days yet, will see how I feel in a week!

So after 1 week on my gym course (diet & fitness classes) I have lost a Stonebiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I am knackerd and have found the first week of training hard , but the diet side of it has been easy to follow and something I can eat for the rest of my life. Mainly less carbs and no junk.

Well done all and welcome to the new guys, anyone object if I amend the table to add a target weight and amount lost column????

Cheers Jon

So roughly 2kg a week of weight loss? Top work. How often are people weighing in? I managed a week of relatively healthy eating. Managed to stick well under my 1700 calorie limit for pretty much all of the 7 days. I'm having to eat a bit more than my usual 1200 cals on the days where I am going to the gym but I'm burning more calories than the extra that I'm putting in.

Yeah roughly that. I've been eating carefully during the week eating at around 1600 calories. I go running twice a week, should do more really. At the weekends i've been watching it less carefully but not going OTT so the first weekend I went out drinking and last weekend I had a dominos on the friday and some bbq stuff for the superbowl. Tend to put around a kg on over the weekend but soon lose it again.

I guess it probably is lurking on little page 82 or something, but are you vertically challenged (as the pc phrase goes)?
That works out at nudging 2000 cals deficit per day, so 3x lettuce leaves a day or a decent amount of exercises. Or, a gnome smile.

Nope i'm 5 ft 11. That target weight is going off roughly 3 lbs a week, at the moment i'm losing between 4 and 5 lbs a week but that will obviously drop off as I lose the weight.

I'm weighing in weekly, on a Saturday morning - purely because I first weighed myself on Sat 4th Jan.

I tend to step on the scales most days, just to see how it fluctuates.
