Two weeks into my first "proper" attempt at losing weight. 5kg down although I feel I should be focusing more on how many inches I am losing from my spare tyre(s). Annoyingly I didn't measure that when I started but I'll grab a cloth tape measure tomorrow and see how wide I am and monitor that.

It's surprising how quick the spare tyres go! My stomach has been one of the first areas to retreat, dropped from 42" waist jeans, down to 38".

Hopefully I'll see a decent difference within another two weeks.

Got a question regarding heart rate zones. I've not really been paying attention to my heart rate when exercising, just been focusing on the amount of calories I have burnt instead. Does it makes more sense to focus on staying in the "fat burning" zone?

Tried the fat burning option on the cross trainer today, felt a loss less tired after 35 mins compared to yesterday when I was exercising it as normal. Burnt around 100 calories less than my normal routine but in theory I should be able to exercise for a lot longer.

It depends on what you read! I've read arguments from both sides, none seem 100% convincing. My partner has a heart rate monitor gadget for going to the gym - tells him what his heart rate is, what 'zone' he's in, how long he should do each thing for, when his body's had enough etc. It's a bit complicated for me though!

I err on the side of caution and split cardio into two levels, the recumbent bike on intervals which will keep me in the 110-140 zone, then the cross trainer hard and fast which will put me in the 170s. Covers all bases, and seems to be working.

I spent a few hours reading more into it and I agree with you, neither side is 100% convincing. I was interested in it after reading a poster at the gym and trying the fat burning mode on the cross trainer. A friend has one of those heart rate monitor watches, quite tempted by one just to see how mny calories I burn during the day doing other activities and for when spring arrives I can see how many calories can be burnt whilst detailing.

I'll have a go at HIT on the cross trainer and low and slow on the bike to see how it goes. Cheers

This all sounds a touch extreme for the gentler end of this sub-forum.

Heart rate monitor gadget confused. Why would what are generally lard people need one? Never even crossed my mind (and I was lard).

Diet (i.e. lifestyle change (hackneyed phrase, I know)), a degree of patience and some reasonably regular & personally intense exercise sufficiently often, not followed by social beers, is going to get pretty much everyone there.

Yup, far too extreme for my liking. My other half though has very mild asbergers, so when he gets into something he will do so 125% - that kind of rubs off on me. I'm quite happy going to the gym and doing a bit, but he'll tell me all about stuff I don't need to know biggrin Anyway, upshot is some people believe there is a heart rate zone where you 'burn fat' and another where you 'improve fitness'. I don't buy into it 100%, but did adjust my workout slightly, as I said, to cover the bases.

Back on topic, had my mid-week weigh in today, 18st 10lb, so only a couple of lbs to go to hit the 2st lost this year mark smile

Mind as well weigh in here again as I'm aiming to drop another few kg before racing season starts this year. I figured it's cheaper to lose the weight than buy a new bike so trying to get as close to 80kg as possible.

My apologies, I wasn't aware that this was the gentler end of the sub forum. I liked the idea of the heart rate watch as I would probably end up trying to beat my calories burnt total every day as I'm odd like that. I have changed my diet a lot and am exercising more than I ever did, I was just looking for ways to keep myself motivated and to increase the weight loss in safe manner.

I tried HIIT on the cross trainer earlier on this week, pushed myself too hard and ended up throwing up a short while after my gym session. Switched back to my regular routine for now.

Great stuff!!

I did a mid-week scale check this morning, and I'm down to 18st 7lb, so now just over 2 stone lost since the start of the year.

Two more to go biggrin

Well done on the loss.

Due to a lot of working hours and now being on my forth cold, I haven't lost anything... Once this cold has cleared I will be getting back to the gym and back to updating.
