To be honest I am struggling with discipline and breaking the cycle of food/booze as emotional support.

Feeling a bit psychologically grim (nothing desperate like the depression thread) - just a bit crap.

Need to stop taking the easy option - get back on my bike and eating better should help. It's just getting over that hump

Food and booze is instant gratification, the good stuff requires a lot more effort and dedication, I find if I slip it makes me feel crap and it isnt worth, it work Christmas do tomorrow, going to drive as had a load the other night, I just have to accept I cant do/have everything, have ordered a salad as well.

January comes and it will be no booze either, until I get to my target.

Stick with it !

Measure yourself at 01/01/17 and I'll do the same. Let's have an X months challenge over weight loss as an incentive. Any profits go to the winners chosen charity.

Ok, sounds fun, did something similar at work last year.

15.11 this morning, last time I weighed that was in 2012, am now no longer obese on the BMI scale, just overweight.

Yeah - that sounds like a decent idea.

When you say profits I assume money that would normally have been spent on booze/cr@p food?

I would join in, but I'm in the US till 13/01/2016... I suspect my waistline will be going the wrong way in those two weeks.

It could be any measure of "profit". If there's enough of us we could just do a fixed amount each. There is the challenge of how we measure loss, either as a flat figure of a percentage of weight when we start, or we could just exclude anyone weighing less than us 😄

sounds as fair a suggestion as any.

Shall we say start of April as an end date?

Went to our offices Christmas do, arrived a smidge late so most were there and one knob goes "Jesus, you look gaunt", he silenced about 15 people with that, I just said "You dont" and carried on, then he comes over realising he had been quite rude and made a bit of a dick of himself, I just carry on as normal, funnily enough i started this thread in September before I really started losing any, about people feeling quite happy to just make a personal comments,

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I was sat last night with two of the biggest guys I know, did I feel the need to point out they are fat, no, I think they may just have an inkling, why spoil their evenign with something like that, it serves no purpose, it is for them to decide and perhaps take the concern of their families an the words of their doctors, nothignt o do with me.

I think what he meant to say is "You look less fat than I remember", he rarely comes in the office and hasnt seen me in a while, got some positive comments of some of the others, one lad I work with said he hand noticed much difference until I was wearing different stuff, he is super into diet and exercise and was really positive.

My wife got this when she was 40 and lost a load of weight, her (podgy) mate came round and said the same thing, maybe I do look a bit gaunt, certainly thinner in the face but really I think it is,

"Oh fk, he/she has lost weight and I am still a tubber and not doing anything about it so I best piss on their bonfire to make myself feel better, hmm, they arent as fat any more so best drop the gaunt bomb"

Some people have you pegged as a certain shape and if you change it, it takes a little while to get used to it, I could turn up in a brand new car and someone will say something like "I bet it is leased" or some crap, but for losing significant, noticeable weight and perhaps looking more toned, there is no short cut I am aware of, months of denial and exercise and still got as far to go.

"If you cant say anything good, dont say anything"

It's been a horrible year personally, I was widowed in February, but getting a bit obsessive about diet and exercise has helped me a lot.

Started the year a smidge over 15 stone - Jan 2 with relatives.

Diet and cardio got me down to about 12st 4lb by the middle of June.

Started using the gym with a PT in July. Down to 11st 10lb by the end of July

Reduced the cardio, more weights. End of September, weight is staying about the same at ~ 11st 9lb

Middle of November - weight still stable, but think body fat % still slowly reducing.

I paid for a couple of DEXA scans - between July 8th and October 12th, I reduced my fat weight from 17kg to 13kg and increased my lean weight from 56.4kg to 57.9kg, dropping my body fat % from 23.3% to 18.4% (DEXA excludes bone mass from fat % calculations).

At the moment, we are still concentrating on increasing muscle mass - at some point I'm going to have to make an effort to lose some more fat, because I've got some stubborn deposits round the middle which aren't going to go unless I do, which will probably mean going back to the protocol we were following in the summer when about half the time in the gym was cardio and I was doing a fair bit of cycling. Still, pretty happy with the results of a year of diet and exercise, and at least I haven't lost it fast enough to end up with loads of loose skin round the middle.

Cheers - I did it before, 2012-ish, and gradually put the weight back on, but that time I did it with just diet and cardio. This time I added in resistance training in the hope that increasing my lean mass will help avoid that outcome. My life has changed so much this year, and I have only myself to worry about, that it's been relatively easy to change my lifestyle.
