Whats the point in this whole thing?
The whole point of the thing is to build up core body strength and get fit by getting into the mentality to want to do some excercise cheaply and quickly. Getting to 100 is a lot of work, and you can see a noticable difference along the way. It is an achievement, which is what exercise is all about.
and end up with arthritis and all kind of problems early on in your life...all the latest research suggests that such exercise is counterintuitive....

They are extreme cases ffs, not everyone who is fit and not a fat slob gets arthritis. How about all the over weight people, what are they suffering from? What about all the people who pull their back out because they have no back muscles.

I'd stick to being fit thanks!

Well if you are happy to be a flabby little man with a boys body, go for it. I will take my chances with the gym.

I'd rather have arthritis when I'm older and be able to look back at everything I have done as good memories than look back as an old man without arthritis thinking I have achieved nothing with my life.

Moderation in all things. Too much training, the immune system struggles and you risk the odd creaky joint when your older, but doing too little is probably worse as you have no energy, poor circulation and of course you gain the appearance of a sack of spuds. smile

Ron Hill is still going alright and I don't think moderation applies to him!

You should see some of the athletes at masters comps some of the V60+ people are amazing even compared to much younger people!

"You don't stop running because you get old, you get old because you stop running"

Been reading Born to Run recently by Chris Mcdonald and this was a quote in it, its a pretty fascinating read really for anyione interested in running, reall sheds a whole new light on running and the human body. One of the best book I've ever read, if I fail my uni exams its because of this!

I don't really think training in our spare time like we're doing is going to screw our bodies up into old age is it? We're talking about doing 100 press-ups here, not running a marathon every Sunday until we're 50!

Keeping oneself fit has lots of benefits. You're hardly ever off work ill, feel full of energy most of the time, you're more attractive to women, you feel better about yourself and, most importantly, when you want to enjoy competitive sport for fun you don't completely nacker yourself! Before I started doing pressups I used to finish test days achey and bruised, whereas now I just breeze through them (got to sort my neck out though!).

Also, by being able to do 100 press ups you can win all the bar bets you want.

Yup, he's basically on a mission to find out why he is constantly getting injured, and ends up training for a race with the tarahumara (mexican running tribe).

Goes into a lot of research into the controversy of running shoes and running barefoot, very interesting read.
