Not that I am feeling unwell but it looks like my mother in law will need one.

I hadd hoped it will be a straight stair job but I can see it needing a 'round the corner' one so as not to get in the way at the bottom of the stairs.

We were thinking of asking for the survey from the new with Help the Aged groups who now do them as I fear some of these companies are out to make a killing and theHTA have a reputation to maintain.

Any recommendations for other suppliers and ball park figures?

I think this is what XLlifts (or is it Xlifts?) on here does, I looked at his website the otherday as Dad's mobility is failing fast and his prices looked pretty reasonable against some of the big named companies.

I am guessing the gorgeous wife doesn't come with the stairlift unless to invigorate old men?

Thanjks for the tip.

Watch out for these

BTW - aren't they usually leased rather than purchased?

Next door neighbours bought the whole thing off fleabay and had it fitted by a local sparky bod. Saved over £2000.00 IIRC. As far as I know when its not needed anymore most folks tend to callt he company that supplied it in the first place and just accept some crappy offer to take it out.

Update:

After all the ads on TV father in law called Help the Aged.

Out comes a rep and looks at the site, says he can do it with a standard Minivator 950 slimline straight stairlift and quotes £2200 fitted. FIL asks if he can do a better price but they say they can't and he is going to sign up, but we have headed saleman off by sending Mrs B and B to watch over the event.

Few taps on the net and FIL can get the same lift fitted from Argos for £1762 and locates it for £1399 fitted elsewhere but you have to do your own measuring and FIL is scared of getting it wrong. So, he phones Help The Aged rep up and tells him he can get the same lift for £1399 fitted.

Price drops to £1550 including the power hinge ( which had been £150 extra).

Help the aged? Help themselves more like. I think they just use their name to put you in touch with suppliers and take 7% but I recall they also have a price promise so worth shopping around.

It seems that fleecing the elderly is big business. I often wonder what mobility scooters, hearing aids, monitoring systems and the like sold to old folk for hundreds if not thousands of pounds must 'actually' cost to produce. irked

My thoughts exactly (don't forget they have to pay for sleazy salesmen and all that daytime TV advertising).

One day the Government might wake up and realise that our own old folk have more right to help than foreigners.

I have a straight stairlift for sale at the mo. Excellent condition. I'd take a reasonable offer.

Be careful of what you sign up for!

The Argos one is different to a 950! It is also worth noting that for reason that cannot be publicly known yet, that they are supposed to be no longer selling lifts.

Be careful of what contract your FIL is signing, they can tie you in to a contract, charge what they like and your stuck with it.

Where abouts in the country is the site? Measuring is easy, if I can do it, anyone can. We have an idiots guide we can send out too!

It sounds like you need a hinge and the bottom of the stairs. These can come in a manual and power option ie one you lift up and down yourself the other does it for you or you have to press a button for it to raise/lower.

Remember, the reps will 'forget' the manual option as it is considerably cheaper and they make less money from it.

In the nicest possible way, its worth mentioned that the company you have mentioned are known for not the best reasons. They use the charity name but be careful. Sorry, I have to be very careful what I do and don't say!

If you want more details, feel free to PM me or Dave (xllifts), we are happy to give you the trade prices so you know the make ups they are making. We all have to make money but some take the michael badly.

Apologies for our website, it is being re-done at the moment so is in limbo state.

Thought of more stuff!

You can do a fleabay job if you like, just watch out for the hidden traders who will try to screw you with an old lift model. If you want to go down that route you can save a fortune.

Its also worth asking local, smaller companies rather than the big names.

Have you thought about getting a reconditioned unit? Can save you a fortune and should come with same warranty as a new one from a good company.

As for renting, in the politist way, its not worth it if he's not planning on shuffling off the coil in three months!
