SciMX do good stuff IMO and don't give me the galloping sts.
Having lifted weights for 21 years I do believe in protein shakes being a quick, efficient way of getting specific amounts of protein into your diet.
PHD also do a good job of price/quality ratio without making your gut rot.Having lifted weights for 21 years I do believe in protein shakes being a quick, efficient way of getting specific amounts of protein into your diet.

OK, a lot of info on this thread, thanks!
I am not trying to lose weight now, looking to put a bit of bulk on! Will be buying full fat milk from now on (ironic as I drank it before when I was a fatty-boom-boom) and eating as much fish/chicken/meat as possible! My new job is good in that I can eat a main meal at lunchtime three times a week, which are also the three times a week I'll be exercising the most
Thanks!

stuff
Why would you need to drink a protein shake when you are already full? Surely that's just a waste of expensive powder... I took whey isolate and creatine and stuff for ages while I was weight training, and as MAM has said, it's just a waste of money. You get far better results from clean, whole food. Loads of fresh veg, a few starchy carbs earlier in the day such as rice and potatoes, oats first thing are great too. Lots of different fruits. Whole milk, fish, chicken and steak.
Unfortunately, I haven't had the time recently to stick to it, but when I move next month i'll get back to it.
Added bonus of eating normal, fresh food is that you don't feel bloated and lethargic throughout the day, which I used to find with the old pasta, tuna and protein shake diets.
Go Maxi Muscle website and order ZMA, Tribulus and Creatine. Take the three as a stack and pump weights, Thats what my OH does and he's huge
Have just been told that Tribulus may not be available at Maxi Muscle and he recommends MYPROTEIN.CO.UK.

www.myprotein.co.uk
very cheap for (I think) good quality. few additives and flavourings, so some of the shakes taste a bit grueling, but worth it.
Always bare in mind, to put weight on, one must eat more than one burns. Trying to lose weight and put on muscle is always going to be very difficult. One has to accept that along with the muscle will come a small amount of fat.
I will second my protein.www.myprotein.co.uk

Good cod liver oil, and glucosamine helps loads.
Oh and a website catering for specific workout for parts of the body, good luck.

They are very cheap yes.
Want to know a secret.....like lots of these things, only a handful of manufacturers actually produce this stuff.....it's all just branding.
Bulkpowders are also a good cheap source for this stuff......if you have to buy it!
This doesn't surprise me, but why then, do they all taste different? I have only tried a few different brands, but then all seem slightly different. And what gets my goat is that Maximuscle is sooo expensive and tastes awful.Want to know a secret.....like lots of these things, only a handful of manufacturers actually produce this stuff.....it's all just branding.

One more thing for the OP is that all different protein sources contain different amino acids. Those with more will assimilate more effectively into your body. The powdered whey proteins are, supposedly, best.
And don't drink full fat milk. The volume you drink is high and that is a lot of saturated fat. (one pint milk has 15-18g protein and skimmed milk has up to 5 grams fat. FF milk has nearly 30g). Not worth it. Fats are important but get them from other sources. Nuts, olive oil, avocado etc.

I only know this through proffessional dealings with all the major nutritional supplement companies.....to be honest I didn't think to enquire further at the time.....was too busy trying to sell them advertising etc!
Of course, in public they would deny any similarities between differently branded products. Quel surprise!
Maimuscle had a major advantage over the newer companies simply by being first to market. It always surprised me that it took so long for competitors to emerge as serious players in this field. I remember dealing with MMuscle over 10 years ago....the others have really only come to prominence in the last few years or so.
What is interesting is that a lot of these products sold in the UK are licensed from the States or elsewhere; they do a great job of selling UK "franchises" to fools for all sorts of effective and non-effective products alike.
One guy I know has dropped £half a mill on some ridiculous Oxygen product sold to him by some slick Aussie marketeers as a secret, Nasa sourced tech . Moron. It doesn't work, tastes horrid and will never ever break into the market. He is tied into buying serious volumes of this stuff for a very very long time. It is going to bankrupt him sadly in the end; despite his delusion that they are on the cusp of a breakthrough....all backed up by the dodgy science he was sold the product with......
It is now a very competitive market, the supplement one, and I can't see them all making it through the downturn. Supplements are very expensive and I presume demand has fallen considerably. In fact, I know it has sue to the number of these guys who are struggling.
Sorry to bore everyone.....

Not at all. Always interesting to hear an opinion, especially if experienced in any particular field. I think that I will stick to myprotein.co.uk!
Does give me nappy st for the first few days of use though.
A structured weights programme is the only way forward. I'm not going to bother advising you on exercises, because there are a plethora of better forums to find this information.
www.bodybuilding.com and www.muscletalk.co.uk are good starters.
At your size, if you are training more than four times a week, with the intention of bulking up, then I would be aiming to get upwards of 150g of protein into your daily diet. An easy way to do this is to have a protein shake alongside a small portion of carbs (ricecakes, oatcakes) and a piece of fruit, which becomes an extra meal. Also look into the benefits of creatine monohydrate (not just for bulking, but also for muscle endurance).
For those saying that protein shakes make you "gassy", I disagree. Any high protein diet will probably result in this - My farts are no worse whether I drink them or not...
A couple of pointers, from experience:
- Eat regularly. Have a minimum of four meals a day, all containing protein and fibrous carbs (~40g of protein, and ~50g of carbs is a good benchmark)
- High protein intake (upwards of 150g is a must for decent muscle growth)
- Replace all rubbish carbs (white bread, white pasta, white rice) with wholemeal varieties
- Avoid unnecessarily fatty foods, but don't ditch all fats (oily fish are great for your body)
- Don't get hung up on counting calories
- Get your five-a-day, every day (it's not hard - look into Catabolic Foods for pointers on which to choose)
- Train regularly and get into a routine
Good luck.
