Got any friends who have had bad backs/operations recently? They might have some prescription strength stuff lying around... Not that you should take this bad advice of course.

My wife's Codeine Phosphate that she didn't need after her caesarian was just, lovely. You might need to google 'recreational dose' but that's all part of the fun.

DISCLAIMER: Do not take other people's expired medicines. Its silly. And dangerous. -love from captainzep's lawyer.
My mother has plenty -shame she's 200 miles away frown and I would have got some from people in the know except I had to go home before I could see them.

I have asked an A and E nurse if she can get me some - but apparently they don't keep it on site because of smack heads and the such. Tsk.

But yeah - prescription drugs rule!

Does anyone know how infectious it is and when the infectious bit is over? I feel like a leper.

Suffering is one word to describe it...

I started on Monday night,(and it had to be on my week off work due to using up my holiday entitlement before the end of March.)
I didn't sleep, drinking was very painful, shivers, sweats, etc I was in agony.
I Insisted to see the doctor on Tuesday morning, The receptionist tried to fob me off as usual, but I said I was going to the urgent care centre if the doctor wouldn't see me. Eventually I got to see him at 9.30am. He diagnosed tonsillitis gave me a prescription for liquid Ibuprofen and penicillin, (I presume mine must have been bacterial rather than viral hence the antibiotics, unless it was precautionary)
I have been taking these for 4 days now and the symptoms are just starting to ease off. I have been in bed most of the week, drifting in and out of sleep. I don't think I have had tonsillitis before, but I now know its one of those illnesses which are very painful a bit like flu.

I forgot to mention, I have a little 18 month boy, who has most probably brought home the virus from nursery, My wife had her tonsils out when she was 5 years old. Its infectious and can be passed on from person to person according to the blurb on the NHS websites. My wife stated to her friends on Facebook that she was going to nominate me for an Oscar in playing the dieing man, typical chartered accountant lacks any human compassion.

Really sorry to hear this. Tonsillitis genuinely is horrific! Its like a naked flame searing the inside of your throat. And is caused by lack of protein to the tonsils. Do you want my MSN id?

I had a sore throat a month ago, nothing much to worry me. Since then I'm totally fooked, aching all over and as lethargic as a sloth.

I've went through 100 Codydramol in the past 2/52, now needing to supplement this with Ibuprofen. Been off work, now into my 3rd week. GP took bloods on Monday, I've to go back next Monday for results. I've put it down to post viral myalgia, bloods will tell if anything specific, like glandular fever, I hope.

Of course, when you are not used to being sick and you have been for a while, you start wondering. Christ, my symptoms make up a good proportion of the same sx for leukaemia yikes but most likely not.

Here's hoping anyway...

I'm not sure you would want to talk to me tongue out

I put myself to sleep at lunch time and finally got up just before 9pm. I might go back to bed again in a min.

Sod this, I'm going to the walk in centre tomorrow. Tuesday to Sat and feel no better - do you think I'll get a prize of some nice antibiotics now??!

The paracetamol and Ibruprofen combination is the problem. They just aren't strong enough to alleviate your pain very much.

See if you can get your doctor to prescribe you Voltarol, 100mg. It will take away far more pain than tripple the combination of drugs you are on. Ask for 100mg, you may get 75.

Failing that, you can order anything from an offshore pharma company. Although unfortunately it wont arrive very quickly.

Cyberface is the PH expert.

shout Cyberface!?!

edit: PS: Voltarol may be branded as Dicloflex.
It sounds like a viagra drug but its not wink
2x 50mg will sort out mega pain.

My brother had quinsey recently which is an abscese on the tonsils! http://www.patient.co.uk/leaflets/quinsey.htm

Try rinsing with salt disolved in water in may help.

Try to avoid the ice cream and dairy products - sorry.

I had my tonsils out when I was 18 and was looking forward to some nice ice cream after the op to sooth my throat. Was told by Adolf Matron that the bacteria in the dairy products clings to your tonsils (or stumps where they used to be!) and breed on the surface. That means your body has another bacteria to deal with so your recovery is slower.

I had to eat plain toast instead, it felt like swallowing glass furious

Hope you feel better soon, it's a horrible condition.

Pain relief is all very well but you need to treat the infection.

If you're taking other meds on top of the prescribed ones, ALWAYS READ THE LABEL. No joke, you can't mix certain types of innocent looking everyday, over the counter medicines as it can lead to complications or even death.

Voltoral is an ok pain killer, mainly used for back pain etc but if you really want to go for if, try an Opiate like DF118s.

Another theory is, take a mild pain killer, just enough to dull the pain, so you remember that you are ill and stay rested until your body can fix itself without interuptions from you, running about as if nothing is wrong as you feel better after taking pain relief.

If you've been given medication, take the full course, no matter how better you feel.

Gargling and swallowing Soluable Aspirin does work well.

Drink plenty of water, lots of it, so you keep urinating.

When I was reading this last night I was thinking isn't it about time antibiotics are considered. Quite often true tonsillitis does need antibiotics. Maybe worth another trip to the doctor.

Don't hang about gargling with aspirin or whatever if you have bad tonsillitis (the kind where it is difficult to swallow liquids let alone food). Get yourself down to your GP for some antibiotics I left it a couple of days to book an appointment and after waiting a further 3-4 days for that appointment I couldn't really swallow the antibiotics and had to be admitted to hospital to be given antibiotics through a drip.

Remember that in the past Tonsillitis could be a killer!

My other half used to get tonsillitis atleast every 2 months when she was working with children and one doctor told her to drink plenty of coca-cola!

His explanation is that it acts as some type of antispetic and also she didn't need to force her self to eat anything as the coke would give her the energy.

She swears by this now and everytime she has a sore throat is instantly drinking the stuff! Try it!

I gargled whisky to kill my last batch. Shame alcohol isn't helping the sore tooth I have now (filling fell out, getting a new one next week)
