how fast can you row 2000 metres ?
Discussion
Am I allowed to post old times from when I was seriously training, or do they have to be as now? Some great times by everyone, keep up the good work.
(I look forward to having the space to have my own machine in a garage or spare room, and get back into it properly. They're one of the best all round work outs...

I think its only fair to have fairly recent times. In last couple of years. But I'm not the judge/ref so anyone else can have a say. You could enter it and put date next to it. that sounds OK to me!
This is a good motivation to gee us along. So dont want to put anyone off!
Us rowers need to be a happy bunch!

Tactical question...
Do people try to go for even splits through the 2000m? - Or even negative splits (ie getting slightly faster as you go through the distance)?
I ask because that seems to be the best advice for to get the fastest times for eg middle distance running...but for something like 2000m, does 'holding back' this much at the beginning give you too much to do towards the end when your leg muscles are all pumped full of blood and might be tailing off anyway...
What do you guys do?

In the past, I seem to remember working it based on for instance:Do people try to go for even splits through the 2000m? - Or even negative splits (ie getting slightly faster as you go through the distance)?

Target = 7 minutes dead.
Average split = 1:45.
1st Split: 1:43 (Fresh legs)
2nd Split: 1:46 (Settle / Rhythm)
3rd Split: 1:46.5 (Settle / Rhythm)
4th Split: 1:44.5 (Just fking do it!)
This means with 500 to go, you should be a fraction behind the target average split for the race so far. I found that choosing two songs to listen to during the torture really helped.
Song 1: Living on a prayer - Bon Jovi
Song 2: Crazy in love - Beyonce
I found the "Wooaah, we're halfway there" chorus useful on the first song, and the rhythm and constant "building" of the second song useful.
Not everyone shared my love of my choices.

Gym managers advice was more intervals - blast it, rest period, blast it, etc.Do people try to go for even splits through the 2000m? - Or even negative splits (ie getting slightly faster as you go through the distance)?

Doesn't tend to work for me at the moment, I try to keep a fairly even pace and keep my form, until the last 500 meters which tends to be a relative sprint finish (think I've been finishing the last 100-200 meters at 1:34 pace on my last couple of rows). Which is a total farkin' biatch.
I'd suggest trying a few techniques, see which works best for you.

Just lopped one second off my 2k time, and this time the pace actually felt relatively sedate. Definitely had a little more pace in me, but it was my warm up prior to what turned into a killer boxercise class. So didn't push it.
Tomorrow is a rest day, think I shall have to be back for more 2k "fun" on friday.

Brilliant - now I have "you gotta hold on, ready or not, you live for the fight when that's all that you've got" going round my head - thanks! Song 2: Crazy in love - Beyonce

Think it looks like more or less flat, with a slight variation around target average (-1, +1, +1, -?) is a good one to try.
nice going...Driller breathes for another day!! prob not got over the excitement of a new president!
Louiebaby...bloodyhell! those old times are superb. you def got talent. you should get back into it and you are in with some British or English medals!
my best 2k saw me sprinting for first section, then settling down and pushing near the end..I think this is the French method!

The qualification times for GB trials at the time was 6:10 and 16:25 respectively. I went to a few but I was never quite there. I didn't like the racing enough to make it. (Oddly I loved the training but not the racing.)Some of the times the other people on this thread are churning out are very good, and better than I could do now. I was working part time and training 4 hours a day, 6 days a week to get to were I did, and that wasn't enough to go International.
I'd love to have the time to get a single scull moving properly again, and a nice location to do it.
