how fast can you row 2000 metres ?
Discussion
OK, maybe it's because it's morning, I understand you answer a bit better now Mag. I have to admit, I'm one of those who automatically whacks it to 10, that's my character to go for max.
A few testing sessions are in order then.
If anyone is around today I might ask them how often the flywheels get cleaned.

Personally, I'd have thought (especially if you go for time), a higher resistance would have been a more heavyweight workout?A few testing sessions are in order then.

I think because the machine works out how much energy is used, regardless of resistance, the resistance is largely irrelevant - if you double the resistance, you would half the 'distance' the flywheel has to rotate to cover the same amount of virtual distance?
I'm with you though Halb - whack it up to max resistance and grizz it out!

It tells of their lack of knowledge by the way they teach newbies about how to pull. Tempting to get involved but I dont!
If I see someone using a rowing machine in a way that is likely to cause themselves damage, I normally ask a gym bunny to have a word with them about their technique. I reason that if I was using a cross-trainer, for example, like an idiot, I'd want to know about it, but I'm not sure I'd want some huge, sweaty, lycra clad stranger to tell me, I'd want a member of staff to tell me. To keep us ocupied while sailing the Atlantic this time we bought a Concept 2 model E. anyway, our rules are 15mins, level 10, one session a day to keep things simple. The first day the guys and girls ranged from 4020m to 2500m, with most of the guys pretty close to 3700m, which surpised us as there is quite a variety of ages and lifestyles on here. We have around 17 days on this crossing, so I'll keep you posted on how much people improve.

Does the "motion of the ocean" not mean it slides around or feel very odd?We are certainly moving this morning - mostly pitching with a slight list to port. Rower is fore-aft so finding a rhythm is difficult. We wanted to race the boat across the pond, but since there is only 16 crew, and we are doing around 13knots I don't think we'd win. Even rowing 24/7 we'd only make about 2/3 of the distance the boat travels.
When we get some wind and throw some rags up it will be interesting - might need to relocate the machine to stop people from falling off.

But its the gym bunnys who dont know either...and they should. I havent seen dangerous pulling..just poor technique. Mind you I saw a friend las night pulling alternate sides like a canoe...saying that it helped his core!!!
One of our crew is a 21yo lad from the Cook Islands and trains like that for his dug-out canoe!louiebaby said:

Very interesting, and I hadn't considered differences between machines - which is definitely something I've started to notice.
One of the biggest factors is the fluff that builds up inside the fan. Also, the fan unit should be 1 metre from a wall, having it right up against a wall disrupts the airflow, and causes problems too. Most gyms don't clean the machines, and have them pushed up tight against a
wall. I have had many a discussion with people working in gyms about rowing machines.
(I start off explaining the situation politely, and it only becomes a "frank" discussion if they point it that way. I'm not a complete knob.)
Anyways, I'm off downstairs to give it a go. 7 minutes? Unlikely.
Driller, apologies, I've just beaten your time. I was aiming for the 7:15, but just didn't have the legs.

Well I had a go and yeh the top ten helps. I did the drag check. At 10 the drag was 206, at 7 it was 160, and at 6 it was 142, so I did the 2000m at level 6.
I recall I was over 20st when I did my old time which was around 127kg. The 2000 was much harder than I thought it would be, started off at 1.50 and thought it prudent to keep it at 1.55 but eventually it slipped over 2.00 even before halfway, but I managed to keep it at around that or under 2.05. Got really tired and did consider quitting but I didn't and when I decided that the time was right I put everything I had into it. Ended with a split of 1.32. Thought I would give myself 10 mins and then do a 500, ha, what a laugh. I was doing OK for around 100 metres at around 1.21 and then after 200 metres my legs turned to jelly and the time went up so much it was laughable and I did quit.
Also, on the 500m one I was pulling a lot harder and if the machine hadn't had some sort of block behind it I would have rowed across the gym, it moved a few inches with every stroke. I might try the higher level for the 500 run.

Good man, well under 8 minutes, a bunch of us at similar times ..... good competition.I also tried the drag check today, similar results to you, but still stuck at 7/160 for the 2k. Feel as though changing it now would almost be cheating myself.
