Reckon if I cut out the smoking for the morning running up to a session, and with a good enough warmup and motivation (couple of the girls down the gym offering me a one-on-one after would be excellent motivation) I'd maybe brush the 7 minute barrier.
I reckon you're definitely not giving yourself the best chance at the minute (boxercise class before 2000m, smoking, cycling 22 miles to work on day of attempt, etc) You've got a 'right conditions' sub-7 mins in you, no problem...In fact you're going to make the rest of us look bad....Hold on a minute, have another cigarette - no, have two!

[Homer Simpson Voice] Mmmm...lovely ciggies...Mmmm [/Homer Simpson Voice]...smile

I'm off on hols next week, so will try one more time before I go for an even paced attempt - but I definitely think I'm getting close to the point of tiny improvements only.
You're right, I'm not giving myself the best chance .... thankfully the boxercise class was cancelled, decided to just do an arms (chest/back) workout instead. Try and work on strength a bit.

I'll play it by ear cycling in and then doing a gym session tomorrow. Did 15 miles last night, I was melting at the end. But I really do need to step it up a notch and get more addicted to exercise than the nicotine.

check out your technique on youtube videos posted before...that way you can see if you are giving it the best you can. Good form could knock a few more precious seconds off!
I had coaching on my rowing many years back, its like riding a bike, once done you've got it. My form does tend to drop off a little towards the end as I tire, but thats probably fairly normal.

Main problems are probably all down to the smoking, resulting in lacking a little lung capacity and cardio vascular fitness could be improved (a lot).

Right then, today's the day.

Here's the plan:

Bit of lunch about 11:30 (last attempt was first thing in the morning on an empty stomach)
Onto the erg at around 12:30
5-10 mins warm up
First three 500s at 1:48 (around 7:12 pace)
Last 500, finish with a flourish at 1:45 - leading to a triumphant 7:09 - ish overall time and a new personal best - what could possibly go wrong?

Will report back later.

Nope, make it a very heavy lunch, chips laced with salt and vinegar, and a gigantic battered fish ....

But in all seriousness, good luck from me too smile

Love it!

Anyway - success!

- avoid battered goods for lunch: check
- remember to do gentle warm up: check
- settle quickly at 1:48 pace : sort of check - was averaging just under 1:47 for first 500, and about 1:47.8 after 1500
- build to a rousing 1:45 pace for final 500: sort of check - final split was 1:46
- finish in 7:09 to set a new pb: sort of check - final time was 7:09.8, so marginally failed to hit target, but a new pb nontheless, and exactly 3 seconds (or 1 boat length in old money) better than my previous pb. Yay!
- don't be sick, or spend 30 mins after row shaking and sobbing in a corner of the gym: check! The more even pacing definitely worked better for me - even if only by making the prospect of going back another time and trying again less off-putting...

Git! I've got to work on my pace, strength and .... nicotine habit.

But congratulations! Being realistic, I've just got to chip away at my 2k time - getting another 9 seconds just to equal you is highly unlikely on my next session .... likely to be friday. I'll probably do a lunch gym session tomorrow, but no legs - got to save them for cycling home (only about 90 minutes riding).

One bonus today - one colleague has been wanting to lose weight for a while, told him he needs a change of workout. Got him on the concept2. Stomach stopped him from getting a decent grab, but he was on there doing between 2:10 and 2:30 pace for the 1k I saw him row. I'll keep badgering him to keep at it.

I think I'm more suited to travelling up the 500m metre table. Gave it a whack today. Did a 5 min warm-up, had a rest then tried for the 500m. Had it had level10/DF211 to ensure the thing didn't jump around, looking good for 125/126 for the first 400m and then in the last 100 all the oxygen in the room disappeared and I had to stop.biggrin
Bloody annoying.biggrin

Thanks! Just had a read. Will have to have a look for this drag factor thing on the ones at my gym. I've always thought 10 was the man setting wink
