No rowing for me recently, have taken to cycling more - looking at road bikes now.

Once I move house, I'll join another gym and get back into the 2000m/wiki challenges.

I always found cycling a great alternative when time on the water or erg wasn't available.

60 road miles so far this week - on a pretty ropey MTB with off road tyres.

I've also been doing a bit more road cycling (including a trip a couple of weeks ago that took in two of the Yorkshire climbs the Tour de France will be doing in 2014...) - but still doing a session on the erg about once a week.

Its funny how effective targets can be - on yesterday's session I decided I wanted to keep to a sub 2:00/500m pace for 45 mins, and despite feeling properly ropey towards the end, just about managed it. I would now swear blind it would be impossible for me to have gone any faster, but suspect I'd be saying the same thing if my target had been 2:01...

Anyway, I went through 10,000m in 39:58, a PB, so have updated the wiki accordingly.

Bloody hell, that makes me feel unfit. I've just gotten back into the going to the gym after a good 4 years of eating whatever I want and doing sweet fk all exercise, last week was my first week back, I was trying to keep to 2:20 to 500m for half an hour and feeling knackered afterwards!

Have I fk... I have made good progress though, always going under 7:25 now and hit 7:15 ish on a really good day usually a monday after a quiet weekend, i'm sure it'll come but not sure I can endure the pain

Been off the boil on the rower since about feb for some reason so have just been building up again.
Hit a suprise p.b over 2500m a couple of weeks ago,did my first 2000m in a long time today and despite ridiculous heat did a 7.46.2 taking a whole 0.1 off the pb!
I know its wrong but i row off 10,gona try a 2k next week with the drag set at the proper rating,i know how to adjust it but cant remember what to to replicate actual rowing, someone remind me?

9 minutes 20 is my fastest, would like to knock a minute off that over the next month or so.
Any tips?
The cardio bit is probably my downside, muscles cope fine but I just don't have the stamina to carry on at something like 2000m per 8 minutes (which will flash up on the screen for on target time if I really go for it!)

Joined the gym at the weekend and had my first go on a rowing machine tonight, did 2000m in 7:59

Guess i should be happy with that, it was at the end of the session.

Cracking 8mins on your first attempt seems a great start to me.

Technique. Plenty of videos over at youtube.

iirc the drive should be 80% legs, 20% arms. Legs should be doing most of the work. Drop the drag factor down (did you have the damper up at 10?), the damper should be anything between 2 and 7 (as much down to personal preference). Again - plenty of videos on youtube, and guidance over at the concept 2 site.

(haven't posted on here in ages!)

Had some fun today, nice and relaxing 8 minute warm up (only about 1850m).

Then tabata. 20s row (giving it almost everything), 10s rest. Repeat 8 times. I didn't truly go for it, as we were intending to do a bit of a distance after .... average of 1m40.2 pace. Then we figured on a 20 minute cool down.

Cool down, yeah, sure. 2 competitive blokes, aiming to try and keep up a 2 minute pace for the whole 20 minutes. 5063m in 20 minutes, we were both sprinting at the end, but the legs were tired.

Tomorrow, may have another go at the half marathon (only done it once!).

Only had a shortish slot for a gym session yesterday and legs were feeling fairly fresh, so I thought I'd have a crack at beating 19 mins for the 5000m (1:54 ave)...I managed to reach 500m to go about 7 or 8 seconds behind pace, and then gave it death for the last minute and a bit...just sneaked in on target with a 18:59.5 (yay!). Have updated wiki. Targets, eh?

I cancelled my gym membership 6 months ago in view of moving house. But our sale fell through so were sticking put for a while. To get back on track (half stone weight increase since stopping gym) I am going to buy a model d and get back into regular rowing.

Watch this space once I can pick up a 'bargain' on eBay. Anything to watch for buying your own machine ?

I have p.bs over lots of different distances so i can mix it up a bit.
Noticed the 3000m was a bit out of step with the others and knocked it down by 10secs to 11-52.8 so well happy with that.

Slowed down from 32spm 28spm and concentrated on technique n breathing, plenty of improvement left i think.

To the poster above,whats a model d,is it a type of concept2?

Two failed bidding attempts on eBay means I am now looking at new rowers. So before I hit the trigger , model D or model E ? PM3 or PM4 ?

And yes previous poster . Concept 2

I'm now going to be ignored by my training partner.

I've been going on about having no pace in my legs (half marathon took me just over 1h30), my 30 minute row last night was way too slow (average 2m02 pace).

So today we decided to try some intervals - 8x45s, 45s rest between. I absolutely nailed it. Managed 1837m, an average pace of 1:37.9. The last time I tried this was on the run up to the EIRC and I was around 1:42 average. So here's me complaining about no pace, but in reality I'm probably faster than I've ever been ...

It really is a large part a mind game - and my mind really hasn't been in a place ready for any decent performances. Motivation, its all about motivation smile

And for the record, I've not found anything that gives you a better/more intense workout than intervals on the concept2. They're intense and damn, do you feel good if you live through them.

I've just ordered the same - arrives this week.

Hope to be able to concentrate on longer rows without the restrictions of the gym. For example, a 20min/5km row at the gym takes 1 hour overall with the commute and the shower.
