No real rowing today, just did a 100m before boxercise class. Legs still a little tired from yesterdays sprints, but figured it would be fun.

15.6 seconds later, but then irritatingly rounded to 15.7 - job done, another PB. Will definitely go faster if I can get the start sorted - first strokes are still too slow, 1:50, 1:30 .... it'll come in time.

3 sessions this week - 12k, 13k & 13.5k. Conveniently takes my total year so far to 200k.
I have been trying to increase my set distance. Currently at 3300m. Do you guys generally do your total distance in one hit or do you break it up like I am doing?
I am finding the first 5 or 6k hard work and then I find a rhythem which I can keep going quite nicely for the next 5 or 6k before then running out of steam at around 11.
Still, its a big improvement on where I started from.

Anyone know of a simple "guide to rowing" that I can print out and accidentally leave/forget on the trainers desk at the gym?
I don't know how people can be in the fitness industry as a 'trainer' and never even look at how you are supposed to operate equipment : )

Pretty solid week last week.

5 sessions for a total of 50,000. Each session was 7,000 then 200 x 10 then 100 x 10.

Total now 124,000 after 3 weeks.

Total weight loss of 1.2kg a nice bonus.

Feeling good and starting to slowly get back in the groove - couple more weeks and will up the pace/training.

I've only just started rowing so it's all new to me. But having looked up some of the faster race rowers they aren't toned Adonises. Matthew Pinsent springs to mind.

Yep - weight loss isn't the primary goal for me - I'm using the Challenge to improve general fitness and my body will settle on the optimal weight. I'm monitoring my weight purely for curiosity to see what happens.

Saying that I'm a big bloke anyway and the years of business lunches have somewhat caught up with me so any loss is always a nice bonus.

The chap I row with has the same situation as you. I have been watching him as he has lost 3kg and his stroke length seems to have improved. I presume it's because he isn't compressing a big belly at the foremost point of his stroke.

Lol - not quite at the big belly gets in the way of rowing stage...!

The lowest weight I've been in the past 10 years was 90kg at which point friends were coming up to me asking me if I was ill. Never had a belly and just a big Scandi type build and years playing rugby at a pretty serious level - 95kg would be a perfect weight for me which means losing 4kg from now.

Fair play, but just a heads up, any 2000m time where you can row more than 2000m is not a time. When I did my 'best over' , at 100m to go I was starting to lose composure and just shut my eyes and rowed for as long as I could. I've since failed 2000m attempts for blowing up too soon.

I would suggest a determined novice male could break 8 minutes. Try rowing at 2min/500m pace and see how you feel.
Can't seem to quite do it. Started in september rowing twice a week as warmup for gym session. First 2000m was 9 minutes 30-something.
got it down to 8:03 now, but can't seem to crack the 8min barrier.

Upped one effort to 5000m in an attempt to get a bit more stamina
Done it!!
2000m in 7:59.7...

OK, not great in the grand scheme of things, but first time I've ever done it.

I'm doing my first ever 2k on Friday, to set myself a PB.

I tend to row longer distances - 7k as a rule. Any tips for technique on shorter distances like 2k chaps?

Quite chuffed to be honest, as I never managed it 20 years ago when I first was going to the gym!

He has the benefit of 8.5 litre lungs! Mine only got to ~6.25, and soon (depressingly) shrunk below 6 after I stopped competing.

sometimes these barriers are all in the mind and I bet the next time you break it the effort will not seem so intense

Main competition is always yourself; cracking work.

320k so far this year, still on a combination 2k and 10k training programme. Getting kinda difficult last few days as I'm way too bunged up. With luck if the cold clears I'll be able to breathe and at the end of the 6 weeks I'll be back sub 7.

Slightly later than usual update, but illness has its ways... spaced out another 30k since the last weekend update so at 217810m now, don't know when I'm going to be back in the gym, but will be nice to aim to have 1st quarter done with a month to spare.

Did 4km on the ski erg last night. Brings my total on the infernal contraption to 7.7k .... Did a 2km warm up (9 minutes), then a 2k time trial - 8m30. Utterly hateful, heart rate was rather high, but interesting that today I am not feeling it.

I'm probably a little jaded with the erg, the ski erg is going to make a nice change.
