I'm at 2,128,372m for the season (thats an average of 7095m every day). For some thats a total part timer .... but my main exercise has been the erg. Having access to the ski erg is handy, it is a totally different, but equally painful beast.

I am about to resume so form of training after about 4 years or so slobbing it which I have thoroughly enjoyed. However its not really the way to live an active and healthy life. I have no intention of competing again and will be happy to get to around 8 mins for 2k as the thought of the pain it took to get into the 6.30's would prevent me from even starting. If I survive the first session I will start posting my result and progress if any.

10k last night. Previous night did 2X5k sessions. All in one piece is tough. Need specs off as sweat just floods from my scalp. Last night s was HR fat burning zone. 2:18 pace at 33spm. ave HR 128. Lost 20 pounds this year so far. Another 20+ to go.

10k on the ski erg?

I'm really looking forward to getting some training in on the blighter. First 2k felt like hell, 8:29 - and if my guess is right, you're just ahead of me on the rankings by about 2 seconds. Am targeting sub 8 minutes over the next few months.

Tell me about it! My first few sessions were 100s, which felt fine.

Then tried a couple of 500s. To say that I faded badly is an understatement.

I'm fairly new to 'gymming' so was really really pleased the other day to do my first sub 20min 5,000m.

though that was only on 7 resistance, and only just (19:37)

I thought my lungs had broken!!

That's good going for a first 5k, I think. You must be quite fit.

You say "only 7" however, I believe that most serious rowers don't go that high.

Thats really good. My best 5k is about 21:18, but I only do it once a week.

I didn't think the resistance made a difference to the time? Lower number = faster cadence, higher number = higher resistance isn't it?

Correct.

All explained nicely here: http://www.concept2.co.uk/indoor-rowers/training/t...

I definitely wouldn't say 'quite fit' - though definitely fitter than when I started at the gym just before Christmas.

The 20m 5K is completely pushing my limits, trouble is now I've done it once I don't want to not always strive for that. Though I'd rather do 2k at a time now and mix in other stuff too.

Thanks guys! I'd always just assumed that the higher number = more resistance = less ground (water?!) covered.

Actually, I should correct what I said. Most serious rowers don't go that high on a clean rower. I was on one last night that needed to be on 8 to provide a drag factor of 128.

In a nutshell, the higher the number on the damper (lever) the higher gear you're pushing.

With the only exceptions being over a 100m or 500m - especially the 100m, which is a case of giving absolutely everything you have for 14 to 20 seconds. The 100m really is now my favourite, I am so going to get down to 15.2 seconds (or faster), thats a mildly silly 1:16 average. Although the fastest guy in the world (Ross Love, a 6'3 massive texan) averaged 1:06.5 - only a few people in the world who can peak at that pace, let alone keep it at that for 100m.

Pushed myself a bit more again this week. My target was 40k which I have achieved. Sessions of 13, 13.5 & 13.5k.
Only stopped 3 times as well today, so certainly showing progress.
YTD is now 240k

I've downloaded the Ergdata app and bought the phone mount and USB cable, only to discover that the gym rowers I use all need their PM3 firmware updating! So I only get the basic data at the moment but it is very useful have the autosynching with the online logbook. I've gone back and manually entered my previous workouts so my logbook is showing 120k (I did start at the end of January!) Currently suffering with a stiff/sore lower back though frown so taking it fairly easy this week

Okay, my first ever attempt at 2k today - 7:38.9.

I think I could have done a 7:20 but went off at sub-7 pace and couldn't maintain it. At about 1k I'd dropped to over 2:00/500 and contemplated stopping, but I hung on and actually recovered a bit towards the end.

Still, it gives me something to beat later.
