546k so far this year; my cardio is improving massively, but I've been focusing on the ski erg.

Tried a couple of 500s on saturday morning, but the ergs at the gym in town are diabolical. Felt completely wrong - massive effort on both of them for the first 200, and the effort I was putting in should have had me pulling sub 1:25 pace, but was "only" pulling 1:30. Legs faded badly after 250m on each.

Yesterday just got back to doing distances, about 23k total between the erg and ski erg.

Back on the pace after my two bad weeks (one on holiday and one was ill).

Last week was 72,500 so now on 589,000 after 11 weeks.

Currently averaging ~53k per week based on every week since I started and ~65k for actual weeks that I've rowed. Pretty happy with that.

Feeling good and aiming for 70k+ this week.

I've started using a rower again this year, doing 5km 4 or 5 times a week (followed by weights and then a 5k run).
This week I achieved 20:34 (resistance 7), which was really pushing my limits.
I usually aim to achieve sub 21:00 for what I consider a good row for myself.

I've adopted a stroke as long as possible and a moderate cadence of 27/28 strokes/minute. Is this the most efficient, or should I reduce the resistance and increase the cadence? Note, when I run I also use a long stride. I'm not tall, but I have proportionally long limbs.

What I have found though is that I can't contemplate what it would take to improve on my 'record'. I just can't get that average down below 2:00 mins/500m.
For me, rowing speed is very consistent and variations between a good and bad day is +/- 10sec over 5k. (Yesterday I did 21:11 and really scolded myself for lack of fitness). In contrast, my variations over a 5k run might be +/- 1 minute from day to day.
You need to vary your workouts if you want to improve your times. If you only ever row 5km at roughly the same pace then you'll struggle to make progress past the initial gains of doing something new on a regular basis. Try and do some longer rows 30+mins where you don't worry too much about your pace but concentrate on a lower stroke rate (20-22) with good technique and power. Also do some intervals, 500m/750m/1000m with 2-4 minute rests inbetween (do several repetitions). Use these to spend some time rowing at a faster pace - your 5k time equates to ~2:03 pace so you should be able to do intervals at 1:52-1:58 pace (depending on length). Same principles apply to your running if you want to improve that too!
I did it! Yesterday I broke the 20 minute barrier for a 5km row, so quite chuffed. (19:56.4 mins)
I've been plugging away rows of under 20.5 mins quite consistently recently, so was waiting for a day when I felt up-for-it to break the barrier. Was still feeling quite fit at the 3k mark, so pushed on through and with the last km at 1:55.7min/500m pace I just made it.

So in tune with the title of this thread, I think that I'll claim a sub 8 minute 2000 metre time smile (although I've never measured over the shorter distance).

Show off! I'm at a pathetic 562k so far.

Half marathon on the erg tonight. That'll burn, back in the sun for around 90 minutes ....

Its been a while since I've visited this thread. 4+ years ago i got my PB for the 2k and its still in there at #11. Following a stint at running, then an even longer stint of laziness, i am going to give this a shot again. It will be interesting to see how nearly 5 years and a 15% increase in body weight impacts performance. Last night i did a 3:45 for 1k - a very long way to go then!

Amazing to see the folks putting in the true distance rows on here, inspirational stuff.

End of Week 16 update - 48k this week, takes me to 548094. I'm thinking I should set aside the final 2k of the 1000k for a 2k test - probably the only way I'd ever make myself do it. So between now and then I'm probably going to look for a bit more variety in particular introducing sprint/interval training/rate pyramids as no point being fit but can't hack the rate and lactic work...

Another rowing forum??? Did not know about that one. There are the official C2 forums (entertaining is you look for the Ranger threads - he's a nutcase, was banned), a couple of indecently good groups on Facebook (I mean REALLY good). But sorry, I can#t help pon that one.

Season is almost over; a few issues in life have completely screwed my training this week (aside from a couple of ski erg PBs last night).

Thinking ahead to the new season and some targets. I'm aiming to finally complete every distance (including 100k) on the erg. Considering up to the marathon on the ski erg. And am hatching some minor plans for something a little bigger for charity ....

I think you can.

My best 2k is 7:59.3 but my best 5k is about 20:30. If you are similar physiology to me then your 2k target should be about about 7:48

Okay, different question then, which is the best C2 forum? (I don't use Facebook)

Guess it comes down to what you want out of a forum? Never joined one for rowing but that one you posted looks properly geeky. If you're relatively new to the sport I'd suggest really nailing your technique over and above anything else IMO and just keep it simple. If you're looking at doing it competitively that's a different story and really better off just joining your local club - but best to do so post Henley (early July) now. You'll get coaching both on and off the water, weights programme, and all will translate into better technique and results on the erg usually for similar cost to a fancy gym membership. And who knows you might even enjoy the social side of things rather than the relatively boring anonymity of PH!

Clonmult - have you ever tried a full 24hr erg?

In part I want to get an answer to a problem I'm experiencing and thought someone on a dedicated forum may be able to help. In fact one of you may know the answer:

I am struggling to get nutrition in within about 5 hours of rowing. Anything at all in my stomach and I start to belch when I am working hard and I just cannot row. This morning I was doing 500m/1 minute intervals and I was finding it easy until 6. Then I got trapped wind and had to stop. It has happened often.

Aside from rowing fasted, which is probably not ideal I don't know what to do. Any advice or does anyone else have the same problem?

Straight, upright back when rowing?
Or hunched (even slightly)?

I have sometimes found myself struggling to get air in, (and subsequently belching when it does eventually get in) if my technique lapses into a lazy position.

Also, if your ankles go beyond vertical as you come to the catch then your stomach will get compressed slightly.
More so if carrying a bit of a weighty mid riff.

Funny you should ask about uprightness, I have just been rowing in front of the mirror checking it. To be honest when I tire I do tend to slouch, perhaps that is a contributory factor. I haven't checked my shins to be honest.

As for a weighty midriff: How very dare you.

Just done 2 x 15min pieces at UT1, so quite steady but it felt like hard work for some reason.

Anyway, thought I'd try another 500m straight after and hit 1:38.5 - beating my previous best by 7 secs.

Did you stop for a fag half way?

Got Phooey on a rower last week. He looked like a frog on a toboggan.
