Blimey ... this has been a good week on the erg and ski erg. Maybe not a lot of distance ....

- Half marathon mid week.
- 6k in the garden last night on the erg left me feeling breathless
- 5k warm up on the erg at lunch today left me feeling like I'd just dipped in the pool but heart rate was low

But absolute highlights are the 100m on both erg and ski erg.
- ski erg got my 16.5 (1:22.5 average)
- today I managed a 15.6 (1:18 average, 1:14 low pull)
- then went on to a 15.5 (1:17.5 average, better start, same low pull)

Time to work on the weights a bit, reckon I'm going to be good for a 15.2 (or faster) if I can get the start sorted.

Back from a break but think I can put myself firmly in the injured camp and illness while away hasn't helped matters, lots more core/flexibility work needed. Still, less than 269k to get in over 6.5 months so not worried, probably going to sub ergs for cycling to rebuild/keep fitness and the legs in shape but take the pressure off the back.

Prior to these last 100m attempts I would have said that the erg can be quite easy on the back - it has helped me recuperate at times.

But today had a few more attempts at the 100m. 15.5, 15.6, 15.6, 15.6. So equalled my PB and then did another 3 a tenth away from my PB. Just need to do more strength work to improve. Definitely can't complain as that 15.5 has put me 35th outright (regardless of age/weight/gender) out of 492 ....

And doing a full on 100m really does pull the back. A lot.

I haven't been rowing for 3 months outside of the occasional 10 minute intervals session. But tonight I did 2k for something to do, but with a different approach. I tried to keep stroke rate below 20, which I managed save for the last 200m. I did it in 7:35.8 which is faster than the last one, but it felt fairly easy.

Im obviously not understanding the "stroke rate". Stroke rate of 20 and 2000 in under 8 mins ??.

Think my SR is around 25 , damper lever on 8 and drag reads around 125's. Now on those figures its a nice steady row which will return me a time of around 8 mins 40 secs , approx, covering 2000.

My readings and assumptions way out , guys?..

Tia.

Sounds fine. At a guess it's your stroke LENGTH that needs looking at.

Might be worth asking an experienced rower too take a look, or row in front of a mirror and compare what you are doing to some of the tutorials on Youtube. I've done both and it helped more than trying to increase effort.

Nice , very good amount there.

clonmult, what is considered ample usage on the C2 per week?.

Also, when you say the ""erg"" , is that the C2?

Not a problem. Maybe I am lazy for not reading elsewhere. However, its just that the settings can't be irrelevant.

On my Life Fitness cross trainer, level 1 and level 25 are very different thus relevant . Sorry, still a newbie to the C2...

Thanks.

I put it on level 10. I always understood that involves more upper body power.

Definitely good on level 10.

Thats how I have understood it. Higher the level, the more air gets vacuumed in via the fan assembly, thus a harder pull. Like rowing a bigger heavier boat. Unless I have misread it on the Concept site.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. BUT I genuinely think had I known about rowing at school (perhaps gone to school :-) I might well have been of an extremely good standard.

I know my current pace is a minute off Olympic time but I'm getting on and do feel back in the day sub six would have been well within my capability.

It's a personal preference along with the age / condition of the rower / person rowing.

Someone might row at the gym and do their best 2000m on setting 3 , where as another person might have a brand new C2 at home and be a well built director type and do their best 2000m on setting 9.

Pfft, setting 9? We've marked ours at home to 11. You can only be taken seriously if the ergs drag factor goes up to 240, which would be an 11.

"Ample usage", depends on what you're doing. My main focus is on overall fitness, primarily using the erg, secondary device is the ski erg. Really need to throw in some weights on occasion.

Erg = C2 rowing machine, Model C/D/E/Dynamic/etc.
Ski Erg = C2 ski trainer. Uses a similar fan assembly, but you pull down with ropes in a cross-country skiing style.

Cheers for the info as usual. I see the Ski Erg on the concept site just wasn't sure what the Erg was. The concept equipment is fantastic stuff and takes little room up.

As I stated, I start on my home Life Fitness Cross trainer in high intensity. Today, did 35 mins on it and then on to the C2 for 40 mins. After I do some weights , but nothing too heavy. I am 50yrs old, 5'10" and weigh around 75kg. Had the C2 4 week now and the muscle mass from waist up has increased, which I didn't want really. However, the C2 sure does motivate you and install and different type of stamina to what the cross trainer does and isn't as boring to use as the CT.

Happy rowing guys...

Considering how many metres I've rowed, and how often (averaging 3k daily), I appear to be getting heavier which is the opposite of what I set out to do.

Need to start on the erg weight loss programme....
