If you're fit, then you've got poor technique. Get onto Youtube and look at some tutorials. A regular runner with your height and weight should go sub-8 without too much effort.
Thanks tongue out
Don't mention it.laugh

You've probably got a short stroke length and / or you're not fully employing your legs.

UNBELIEVABLE!! :-)

I'm going to give it another go on Friday having watched a couple of youtube vids. Don't think I'm maximising my legs...

Technique makes a massive difference to both performance and injury prevention.

You've probably already found Dark Horse Rowing on Youtube?

I'd watch his technique videos and try again in a couple weeks. You'll almost certainly see an improvement from using the legs more and sorting breathing technique out.

I am no medic but I am not sure that going from 7:28 to 7 aged north of 50 is a brilliant plan. I started rowing to replace a proper rower - 6:20 man in his 50s - who died on a Concept 2.

That said, 7 minutes was until recently my goal. But I’ve come to realise that I don’t want the risk or the leg muscles that come with it.
Look at the leg size of the fastest rowers - they don't tend to have massive legs. Massive legs is the thing for short track cycle sprinting.

I'm 49 years old, I'm going to be aiming for sub 6:50 when I turn 50 later this year. Technique is just as important as fitness - you can possibly gain huge amounts from minor (or major) changes in your stroke.

.
Although some of that comes from height. If you're 6ft6 it's hard to put on muscle size that LOOKS big unless you VERY specifically train for that. Next to a 5ft7 gym buddy of mine my arms looked "lean" rather than muscular and his looked huge - yet mine where bigger.

This. Rowers do have big legs but they are typically lanky. A short arse rower I knew was fast but had legs like my torso.

bks. I spent last week being dumped out of the early rounds of Henley Royal again, and assure you decent oarsman will generally have massive legs.

Yeah, I was there on Wednesday watching my son and the Pimms got me thinking "I'm sure I've got one more campaign in me...." I just need to find some like-minded, deluded souls.

Nope - massive legs would be someone like Robert Forstemann. A decent oarsman will have larger than average legs, but not "massive".

Can you imagine a 6ft6 rower with legs like Forstemann!!!! If he was in proportion, he'd weigh 400lb!!!!

Did you see the videos of Brian Shaw or Eddie Hall rowing? They do weigh about that amount. Although surprised that neither of them actually beat the 100m record - they should have the strength and cardio to do it with "ease". Maybe that puts the efforts of Ross Love and a couple of others into perspective - the fastest people over the 100m, 500m and minute are not built like a traditional oarsman, they're way bigger.

First attempt at this for a while tonight - 8:44.

I’m 6’2”, 86kg, snowman arms.

Pretty happy with that though.

From looking at them, it's mostly lower back that gets them the good times.

I don't wish to urinate upon your pommes frites, but if you're able bodied you shouldn't be happy with that. You're a big, heavy lad and should be close to 8 minutes without even trying.

I’m not a ‘built’ 85kg though. I’m a ‘recently lost a chunk of weight’ 85kg, so I have the arms of a 12 year old at the moment.

Either way, it’s a starting point. Thanks for the complex though!

It has little to do with arms. It's mostly a leg exercise. If you're going to say you've also got the legs of a 12-year old you need to post up a photo of your torso and head. smile

In all seriousness though, look at some of the rowing tutorials on Youtube. Your form needs some work. You don't need to be a gym god; with your weight and physique a basically decent technique will take 30 seconds off your time.

And every able bodied adult male should be able to deadlift 200kg the first time he tries...

The guy has just said he’s a fat and weak, so he’s not likely to be generating much force!

It’s not the same thing at all, it’s more akin to him being unable deadlift less than 60k for a single rep.

I am not being horrid to the chap. If it were his strength I would say nothing. But anyone of his height and weight should be able to do around 8:15 with little effort, disability notwithstanding. It is just technique.
