Had a crack today, thought I would sod the 500m since my last two attempts have been so risible. Had a go at 2000m with the aim of keeping it at around 1:55. I actually achieved this for most of it and allowed myself to slack off and go above 2:00 for a bit. I put the level at 8/177DF in an experiment since I think the lower levels are no good for me, just too soft. Looking at the screen it said the avg was 154.2, the split was 1.45 and the 500 was 1.30. I then tried to do 20 mins of 'easy' rowing afterwards but my gluteus maximus was just so sore, obviously not used to it, and only did 10 instead. Just did 1:42 on a 500m go.
Went for it way too hard and only managed 350m, nearly passed out! Was very quick up until then, annoyed I couldn't carry on.

As promised halb i had a go and stepped it up tonight. Turned the resistance up for 5 to 10 after reading the gear theory. I ride a lot of biketrials and have pretty good power so thought resistance 10 may suit me better. Previous best time: 7.47.1 Tonight's time: 7.22.0 oh yeah baby! Much easier on resistance 10. Took off like a maniac thought damn this is easy, then hit the wall lol settled in to 1.50 pace then gave it beans for last 250m. Was tough but I definitely have more in the tank. Again if someone could update my time that'd be great. Loving this thread not that I'm competitive lol

Do you breathe in on the pull and breathe out on the forward slide? I can never really get into a decent routine and end up breathing all over the place

So out on the drive, and in when rolling up the slide.

It's difficult with the 500m to know how best to approach it - I'm tempted just to start as quickly as possible and just try to hang on to the end even if the splits are dropping. If you go at it with a time in mind and try to maintain an average split (which is fine for a 2k) I think you're likely to still tire and end up tailing off.

My calories per hour thing (I think it's calories per hour..) was at about 1,500 for most of the 350m but I couldn't keep at it. Might do like you say, go mad for as long as I can and then slow slightly but still keep at it as hard as I can.

You're looking at 50 or so strokes. It'll be almost all anaerobic, and cause massive lactate build-up very quickly. Your heart rate will go through the roof. It's a test that is likely to cause the most problems, since people just f king go for it. It's the only way to do it, but if you don't have strength in the right places, (like the lower back,) and good muscle memory to keep your technique, you could do a lot of damage. For these reasons, it was generally accepted that juniors should stick to doing longer races, so they concentrated on endurance and technique instead of putting too much power through under-developed muscles. Just a bit of a warning for people thinking about the 500m board...

I can never really get into a decent routine and end up breathing all over the place I have tried getting my breathing to match the up and down bit. I do the same as squats (or any other strength work), I inhale bending the legs, to get the burst and then exhale as I push out.
