8.12 for the 2K this morning.

That should easily have been under 8 mins as I left most of the effort until the lasty 500m. If I'd have paced myself better during the first half it would have been a lot better.

At least I now have a benchmark time to improve on.

I've not done a 2k (or much rowing full stop) recently.

However, to earn a meal out tonight I will do one when i get home and report back. Hoping to do a 1:55x3 and then all out for the last 500m ~1:45 , which would get me 7:30

Wish me luck !

Rather depressingly I saw on Concept 2's FB page that one of the company founders recently did a 6min 50 time for the 2000 in a competition.

And he's in his 60's.

Well here's how it it went.

Strong start just under 1:55 followed by 2 decent 1:54, stepped yo the pace 1:45 in the last 500m and kicked for home at 250m.

Just a but too early as I hit the wall at 75m to go and even with my eyes shut and teeth gritted I couldn't finish.

Literally felt like in was going to black out.

Another try tomorrow....

Just done my first 2k on the new C2 - 7:33.1 with a split of 1:55.
Quite happy with that considering the last time I sat on a machine was about 4 years ago.

I want it below 7:00 by Christmas.

(I'm 45, 96 kgs, 6' 3.5")

And I feel fked!
At your age and size you should destroy the 7 min barrier.Get yourself on to the Concept 2 site and the interactive training.

Thanks for the compliment (I think...) but I'm not all muscle and fitness hehe

Did my very first 5k this morning - 20:21, which puts me about 1400 out of about 2500 on the Concept 2 rankings.

you would be amazed how a simple structured training programme can help. you have the height which gives you an advantage straight away

Well I've just got myself a C2 training programme for the next 7 weeks so we'll see how I go.
(Not looking forward to the 4x15' starting tomorrow!)

To be honest, I only got the machine for my daughter to do some off-water training whilst her coaches are away.
She thought she was going to have an easy 3 weeks....

Anyway, the bug has bitten me now although I'm not sure it'll extend to the water.

I have only just started doing a 2k row and found the thread through a google search!

Couple of days ago I got a 8 min 24 so tried harder last night and got 7 min 40.

I am a regular gym goer but mainly stick to weights and very little cardio, thought Id try this to help work on my legs/back

I'm really getting into it too.

I used to use the stepper and the cross trainer in the gym but have just been using the Concept 2 for the last 2 weeeks and am really feeling the benefit already.

I was fairly fit and a regular gym goer before but had around 3 months off when my daughter was born but back into it now.

This morning was a 30 min row up toaround 28 / 29 spm followed by the 500m / 1min rest intervals. I did 8 at around 30 / 31 SPM.

I've also signed up to the Concept 2 Daily workout which they email to you every morning so going to give those a go as well.

I'm planning to do the 2000 meter test at the start of every month to check progress.

Lots of lads pushing out reguarly 2k tests here. You must all be mad. I haven't done one since about Feb.

Regular sustained UT2 efforts with some shorter UT1 stuff for me this summer. 60min r18-20 at 1:54/55ish or 3x6km at similar pace will hopefully be enough to keep my 2k respectable.

I did 5x8' AT1on Monday and it nearly finished me off!
Yesterday was day 2 of my 3 times weekly, (7 week plan) sessions - 4 x 15' UT1

Found it quite boring first 15 mins but then realised as I only needed to do 20-24s/m I could concentrate more on technique.

I then finished off my session with my first 500m - 1:48.
I think going into a 500m being fresh I can considerably better that.

Have to say, 2 weeks in having this C2 at home has made me use it loads, and I can feel the benefit of it already.

Been watching some 2k attempts on YouTube.

For the ultimate 2k, where can you shave off as few seconds with technique/tricks ?

I've seen some videos where they flick the handle at the end of the stroke.

I've seen others where they recoil until the handle is essentially right back to the guide box.

I must get a sub 7 minutes to satisfy my own target. Yes I watch online people doing sub 7 minutes without any apparent pain.

dtmpower. watch the races at EIRC or BIRC. Paul Buchannan excellent. Rob Jones muscle bound and uses arms only. The final flick gives extra oomph to your 500m pace. I will never do a 2k race again.

There are no tricks. Strong legs and back. Big aerobic system. Effective stroke length.

Regular 60min or 3x6k UT2 r18-20 ergs and 30min r20 tests will provide a strong foundation for 2k performances.

Apologies sir. 60 minutes or 3 sets of 6km on the erg at a consistent power output that generates around 2 milimoles of lactate. Or basically done at something like 60% of max heart rate (a good sweat and a decent puff). Low rates; between 18 and 20 strokes per minute to develop efficiency of power in each stroke.

30mins at r20 should be done as a test. So you are aimiing for maxiumum effort. You should aim to die just after 20mins gone and then keep going. You should not do more than 1 of these a week. If you can you haven't gone hard enough.

So far so good , been up at 6am 2 days in a row this week for 30 minute session at steady pace.

On the longer sessions I am finding 2 things, my abs are aching (over extending back?) and also I am fixated by the monitor, how can I distract myself ?

An hour session still seems a longggggg time. I've removed my foam seat pad, the seat seems more comfortable without it now.

---

Also with regard to a good 2k time - what are people using for their drag factor. I find if I start on 10 I can maintain a good 1:50/500m pace, but then towards the end I don't have the control and power left to maintain it. If I set the drag factor on say 4 , I can row constantly for the 2k but don't have the grunt to get the pace down to the required <1:50/500m to improve my times.

My previous best 7:17 seems a long way off these days.
