Well done. That's a huge milestone to achieve.

Holy bleep, I've finally broken the 7 minute barrier. About time too ....

Had a mate pacing me (ie. go faster, go faster), with target splits being 1:45, 1:45, 1:45 and then as fast as I could go at the end. Splits were 1:45, 1:44.9, 1:45 and 1:43.0 for a final time of 6:57.9.

And to add to my overall feeling of speed, I did a PB on the 1k last thursday (3:22.3).
thumbup - nice one mate!
Nice one!

I've been lazy the last couple of weeks and only rowed once between traveling for work frown
You've spurred me on to break the 7 minute barrier by Christmas - I got very close 3 weeks ago!
There's a problem with finally hitting that target - originally I was hoping to be in sub 7 shape for the BRIC. But as I'm already there .... I had to put down a target time, and from previous experience I'm about 10 seconds faster in a race.

So I've put myself down as a 6m50 target. Ouch.

Also means that I'm going to have to be regularly putting in 7 minute sessions .... and now being all full of a cold and catarrh, even pulling an 8 minute 2k is a trial.

Anyone else intending to take part in the British Rowing Indoor Champs? Looks like being a good event, despite the mildly insane cost.

Ok so I have been rowing using 10 on the drag setting. Some reading shows this is wrong as it puts pressure on the spine. My size I should be 6-7. Am I likely to see an improvement in times as I lower the drag?

I would suggest you read up on the drag factor and how it works - 10 is not always the same. You need to go into the menus to see the "actual" drag factor.

For example, at our local gym I normally have the dial at around 6.5 on a couple of the ergs, and the resulting DF is between 125 and 135.

But at that gym, there are a few of the ergs where the dial at 10 results in a DF of 95 .... basically, they need maintenance.

And the DF that you use can vary on the distance. On shorter distances (100m, 500m) I'll tend to use a much higher DF (high as possible for the 100m, 150something for 500m). 1k and 2k I tend to be around 125-130.

I finally nailed it - a 6.58

I did not feel very good for 5-10 minutes afterwards, but it feels good now!

It is a brilliant feeling, eh? I had a minute or two of feeling absolutely shattered after mine ... I should have been able to go a little quicker, I was bouncing around the office in the afternoon.

Now, get yourself over to the Crash-Bs! Would have suggested the BRIC, but seeing your location ... I hope that in the next few years I can make it to Boston.

It really is a great feeling (eventually), although not sure I had anything left in the tank at this particular juncture, like you did!

Not sure I'm good enough to compete but I have embraced the joys of RowPro recently. I raced myself tonight for a 5k and seeing my previous PB boat rowing alongside my 'live' boat, really pushed me to beat it! Even though I nearly failed with c.800m to go, seeing the other boat catch up and overtake spurred me into some sort of crazy 2nd or 3rd wind which ultimately bettered my time by 12 seconds to do it in 18.54.
It's probably not the correct strategy, but that was a first race attempt and it can be argued that it worked out this time.

get yourself to a competition and you will knock 5-10 seconds of that .The adrenalin rush you get will spur you on.

well i did my first hour-session on Sunday. quite tough, although i kept it at (what i thought was) a steady pace - around 1:58/59 per 500m. the last 10 minutes saw me wanting a new backside hehe ended up just over 15km - fairly pleased with that, although as my first attempt, i really was just going along to get the hour done. even so, it's hard to imagine carrying on to do a half-marathon, let alone a full one, but i guess that will come with time and more training. maybe my backside will get used to it too biggrin

and i didn't have much left in the legs to train with on Monday or yesterday either redface

The longer distances are all about pacing yourself, even split of psychological and physical conditioning; I did 5 HMs (in one week) for the crazy bear challenge (fell ill which put a stop to it). 4 were personal bests, the 5th was just a bit of fun to see what my heart rate would do for a 90 minute (130bpm average).

If I'd been able to keep going it would have been relatively easy to get it done at 2 minute pace. And whilst it isn't obvious, those longer distances have huge benefit to sprint training. My sub 7 was done after those 5 .... felt in the best shape of my life. Going to have to do some more on the run up to the BRIC smile

Today I managed 5k @ 20.19 which was my second attempt at this distance. Last week I did the same distance in 20.59 so my fitness and technique is coming on ok. Hopefully with a bit more hard work I can drop into the 19's. My 2k is still 7.42 so in the coming weeks I'll have another bash at trying to bring that down further aswell. It sorts of gets under your skin trying to beat your times doesn't it!

Just rowed a 6:54 2k as entered this Brit Champs event so wanted to see where I was at - Also gives a bit of New Year Focus - What setting is the drag set at for Official 2k times?

Anyone else entered or going along?

Just rowed a 7.33.1 for the 2k which beats my previous best of 7.42, so I'm pretty happy with that. And this was after a bottle of red wine last night aswell so this makes me even happier as I wasn't feeling so fresh!

There is no "official drag" setting. Just set it to whatever you're comfortable with. There is apparently an official setting for erg tests related to water rowing, but can't remember what it is (seems to be continual debate as to the actual figure).

6:54 is good - I'm aiming to be low 6:50s before the BRIC and then sub 6:50 on the day.

I'll be in the old/fat category (40-49, HWT), wish I had an idea of the start time, having to be there for for around 9am is going to mean an early start (walk to the station, 40 minutes train, no idea how long on the underground, etc.)

I think the general suggestions are "lots". And "varied".

The week before my 6:57, I did 5 half marathons - 4 were personal bests, 1 equalled my prior PB but only averaged 130bpm (ie. very easy). It gave me the confidence that I could improve my time.

Lots of squats, kettle bells, core strength sessions, running, cycling, distance work (capped HRM), intervals ... basically just do a wide range of varied exercises. Times will definitely come down.

There used to be a site called Petes Plan which gave week by week sets. After 12 weeks I got sub 7. If its still there use it.
