think it might be worth a thread... it is a great way to test general fitness and and great way to improve stamina.

My Fastest recently which was about 2 weeks ago was 7min 23sec

Good Idea.

I only normally get to 1500 metres, and then stop, but I aim to do that in about 6 mins, I really need to start building up my fitness.

Another rowing target, ta. I used to hate the rower loathe and detest it, however since stopping playing rugby due to a snapped ACL i have really got into it.

Started with the 30 mins of 500m sprints try to get them all in the sub 1:55 area. That used to waste me, then worked up to 30mins constant rowing and finally some idiot at work said "oh try an hour, once you get passed 30 mins it's all down hill" like a fool i believed him argue, 15k later i wanted a new arse and palms for my hands.

I think i'll try the 2000m as it is a hell of a lot shorter than the hour hehe

7:50 is my best
I actually dont do 2k that often, if ever really

My preference is for 30 minutes
I aim for 7k and usually achieve 6800-7100

Male
41
Lightweight

Anyone else do 30 mins?
Id be interested to compare notes

EDIT: I have ranked myself online at C2.co.uk and am between the 25th and 50th centiles - which is fine

I was curious what other non-trained amateurs like myself do, most of the guys ranking themselves on C2 online must be keen to actually be there and also list club affiliations in their profiles

Before the gym took on so many punters you couldn't actually get to use anything (barely get in the door), I used to aim to do 1000m in 4 mins, slow to start as a warm up and hard as I could for the last 2 mins. But by then I was done for. There's no way I could have done another 1000m at the same pace.

I did 6:53 a few years ago, felt great to break 7 minutes but was extraordinarily painful. The guy next to me beat me by a full minute too!

Doubt I would break 8 minutes today, must start training again.....

That makes you pretty tasty then

Out of interest have you had tuition and are you a club rower, or have you been?

Think mine was around the 7.40-50ish mark. I am 32 and 13 stone. I checked online to see how my PB of 500 metres was and its not bad at all. I have done it in 1.28 which was a killer. 1000mtrs is about 3.17. Not using the rower at the mo as the last 2000 I done on Friday has left me with a rather painful bruise.

The guy sitting next to you did it in 5:53, thats a lie isn't it ? Thinks thats only a few seconds off the world record !

Under 7 minutes is very goods though, i think if i gave it everything i might do 7:10... will have anouther go in a few days time

this sounds fun, though in the concept2 rules it says there is no damper setting restraintrs? is'nt this the resistance setting lever 0 - 10? surely that makes a big difference, or have I the complete wrong end of the oar biggrin

I always have it set too 10 when I occasionally row, have only ever done 10 min sprints but am quite powerfull so think a good time should be achievable.

Resistance level 10, oh crap!'

I only ever use the bloody things to warm up and usually hit the 1K at Resistance level 7 in circa 4 mins, I don't feel too puffed after though. I'll try 2K.

Do you do the 2K without warming up? Also, I'm sure I will need to pace my self so are there any tips for good times?

I'll have a go.

I usually do 5k though for a better cardio/fat-burning workout.

The C2 website recommends a much lower resistance.
However, I agree just keeping it to max makes comparison easier.

"Concept II - King of Pain"
biggrin

My current record for 1,000 metres is 3:20, which pretty much killed me about 3 weeks back. For 2K I notched up a 7:18 last week and almost vomited a kidney after finishing... I use resistance 10 because I find it easier to get the power down against some proper resistance. I'm 33, almost 20 stone and rowed/coached right through school and university so have the technique pretty well down.

Another fun exercise is to see how low you can keep your split time, while rating no more than 19. 1:46 for 1 minute is about my limit. It's brutal.

Good thread! I managed 2000m in just under 7 minutes but I was racing a younger and fitter colleague so I overdid it a bit - competitive and all that. I honestly nearly threw up afterwards.

My preference is for longer rows - my best for distance is 10k in 38mins 35secs but that was pretty much going for it (ie keeping under 2mins per 500m) and I now try and row for an hour and get to about 14k - I think that pace is probably better from a weight loss perspective.

Regarding resistance, I understood that it didn't matter what you put it on - my preference is 8. It's supposedly like gears on a bike - you can have it on 1st gear but you won't get very far, and 10th gear feels harder but you go much further.

OK, he wasn't actually next to me, but we were in the same row - British Indoor Rowing Champs, 2001-ish. I entered following too much big talk in the pub (anyone can - you don't have to be in a club or anything). In my heat of 40 rowers was this enormous German guy (6'9", chest like a bag of footballs) who won the whole event, and it may even have been 5:49, which is still nowhere near the record. Matt Pinsent has that, from memory, in 5:40-odd.

ETA - 5:42.3 is Mr Pinsent's PB, which is pretty amazing. That is sub-1:26 pace the whole way!
