Well back from the hols & hit the C2 last week.

Nothing outrageous as drinking Champagne for breakfast then topping up with beer all morning is not in the endurance athletes best performance manual...

But did manage 32.5k last week for a YTD total of 543,176

why oh buggery why did I sign up to this poxy challenge??? Shoot me please! shoot

Second go, dropped to 8:48 and still feel I can do better as I went out too fast.

Happy at least with the improvement

Getting my C2 model E delivered tomoz, can't wait. I have had a Life Fitness cross trainer for years and its done wonders keeping me in shape. The 2 should pair up lovely for cardio workouts, maybe 30 mins on the CT then another 30 mins on the C2. That followed by some light weights for 15 mins.

Been wanting a C2 for years but will not be doing sprints on it yet though. I shall build it up at a sensible rate.

Ouch ... decided to do a 1k time trial yesterday. My normal office gym training partner had to pull out; instead I had coaching from a senior manager (who used to row at uni and is indecently fast).

He pushed me to a 3:23.4 1k, 2 seconds off my PB. The PB was set after loads of training, yesterdays time was done after no recent sprint training. Guess my fitness isn't quite as bad as I thought ....

Haha, just read the threads page 1 , 2 and 3 to check my time. Well , I have not used a C2 for 12 years and today, on my first usage of it, covered 2k in 9.20 secs, level 10, did my cross trainer beforehand too for 32 mins, again on the high levels - 14 , 15 , 17 and 18 resistance.

I know I smash that time fairly quick, however , not exactly young anymore,,, 50yrs, 5'10', 12 stone. Really enjoyed it though, just hope I do not get too hooked..

DON'T USE "LEVEL 10" - for one, it isn't a level as such. Before doing a row, go to the menus, bottom option, then choose "Display drag factor". Pull a few strokes to see what drag factor you're getting - most rowing (apart from the 100m, 500m) are typically done at a drag factor of around 130 (personal preference comes into play a fair bit).

Damper/drag factors vary from device to device. Many gyms don't ever bother to clean the fan assembly or oil the chain and as a result they effectively slow you down, and a damper setting of 10 can give you anything from a DF of 100 (knackered) to 210-220 (ie. pretty clean).

I've seen claims of increased chance of back injury from using a higher drag factor (unsure if there's anything behind the claims); dropping the drag factor will feel real real weird to start with, but maybe in time it'll become easier.

Thanks again. Going to do a workout today, so I go in to the settings. Buy some 3 in one oil too for the chain. Concept say apply oil every 50 hours of use, but I will apply some very soon..

Bumped into this thread via Google whilst looking for the world record for rowing in 10 mins, as that's what i've been doing since around Christmas. I think when i started out i was rowing about 2,100m in 10 mins and have recently got that up to a PB of 2,450m, which was pretty knackering. Having had a look through the first few pages of this thread, i had a go at a 2,000m row. I've only had one stab at it in the gym last night, so my pacing was off (started too hard, big dip in the middle, finished stronger) but set a time of 8:02. With better pacing i could no doubt get that under 8 minutes, which is now the target. For context I'm 34, 5'11 and a cheeky ~80kg, hence the gym. Five years of living in London saw me go from <70kg to my current, ermmmmm, 'cuddly' physique.

Interesting point about the drag factor in the comment above, i'm definitely going to check that out. My gym is cheap and local but the equipment is poorly maintained. I set the 2,000m time on level 10. All previous rows had been done at level 9 for no reason other than consistency, but i did wonder how much it may vary from machine to machine.

Fly and die, cracking way to go. I did a seasons best on the 500m last week, first 400m was perfect, legs then gave up with about 50m to go. Still happy with a 1m33.

8 minutes for your first 2k is pretty good.

Our local gyms ergs were in dire shape - with the damper set to 10, the drag factor should be around 210. I've seen them vary from 90 (which should be the drag factor with the damper set to 1) to 150. Definitely check the drag factor on the menus - just pull a few strokes with the menu option displayed to see the state they're in.

Erg maintenance is pretty easy. Bit of oil on the chain, cleaning is a case of 4 screws and a vac/wet wipe. Makes a huge difference. But the gyms do not care.

Awesome weekend for me on the erg. Mainly seeing my 14 year old son - he's started to take training semi serious, he did a 100m in 22.3 (1:51.5). then figured he could do better - 20.8 (1:44), he peaked at 1:37. Seeing the way he was smiling away was rather a brilliant moment.

Hi Snubs,

Using interval training at the moment. Completed 30 mins of - 2 mins quick, and then, 1 min steady. Enjoyed it. Great machine to have along with my cross trainer.

Do you do intervals?.

Thats a great time, think I need to use my legs more to make the pull back a stronger one. Think my drag read around 125 to 130 on damper 8.

Had the C2 for a week now and covered 2000 in 8.30, so its coming down and thats after my 30 mins on my CT..

Does your son row for a club?
Best thing my daughter (also 14) started to do 3 years ago.

Have just spent yet another enjoyable weekend down at Dorney lake racing.

His sport of choice is currently Rugby .... and as much as I love rowing, Rugby has it well and truly beaten on the social level. It also has rowing well and truly beaten with regards risk of injury.

That's a choice my lad will come across in the next year or so - he's nearly 11 and has been playing rugby since he was nearly 6, but wants to follow his sisters footsteps into rowing.

From having a foot in both sports, I can see how well they actually compliment each other.
Two great sports that build fitness and mental ability.

I'll just support him in whatever he chooses; he got into rugby a few years back after his mum and me were rather "unhappy" at the way kids football tends to be run. Rugby is truly a team sport.

I've been telling him for years that rowing will improve his fitness for Rugby, he's finally figured out I wasn't making it up.

He's also doing a fair bit on the ski erg - targeting the british 500m record (he's closing in on it).

Did my first half marathon tonight - 1hr 34.

The last 7k was hard - felt like 2m forward, 1m back at times...

Also took me over 250k lifetime and 105k for this season.
