Update... After nigh on 3 months without erging (not counting 1 session where I just tried a 30" to see if my back could survive) and lots of stretching/yoga/cycling, gave a 6k a go. Managed to get to the end of it and back didn't play up. Still far from perfect and lots of stretching required before and after but if I'm going to complete this stupid challenge it's going to have to be lots of shorter sessions every week. Split/HR was worse than at the start of the year (when rowing 12k!), but such is life - did do it with feet out though. Also it seemed to take forever - I have no idea how I endured 18k nonstop couple of times a week earlier this year.
Also - thoughts on rowing without strapping feet in? Forces you to not over extend at finish? Any downsides?
Downsides - its slower. Also - thoughts on rowing without strapping feet in? Forces you to not over extend at finish? Any downsides?
Focuses everything on the initial drive of the legs, its just a different method of training. No major benefits, but often a change can help relieve the boredom.
I've been effectively "off" the erg for a few weeks, and during that time I've been signed off for a 1k time trial at work next week. Last night did a 5k with HR cap - it was slower (way slower) pace than the 14k HR capped rows I was doing 3 weeks back. Scary.
Although did just do a rather nice 100m and equalled my PB (15.2, 1:16 average).
For the last 8 months or so I've started taking advantage of the small gym at work - which has a Concept 2.
I use it as a warm up - in there everyday pretty much during the week.
Started slowly - struggled to do 1000m at first - nearly passing out at 5-800m.
Then setting 1000m as a target got my time to a consistent 3:40 after 3 months ish.
After a big push I managed a 3.27 - resistance always left at 9 for no other reason than that was what it was when I started.
Over the past 3/4 months I started to push the distance to 1250 then to 1500 - I do 1500 in a consistent 5.20-30 ish.
Last week I was feeling good - went for 2k for the first time and managed 7.10 - it was tough!
Ok - so maybe not that impressive - but I currently weight about 157kg. When I started I was something like 190kg - used to smoke quite a bit as well..
Could be a 2k record if only there was a 'morbidly obese' category!!

7:10 is a great time - well done.
I have to say though, and don't take this the wrong way, but fk me that's heavy!!
I've just hit 98.5kg as I've not be ergo-ing regularly for a month or so for various reasons (and a holiday..) and that's bloody heavy for me.
But anyway, you're having a damn good go at it and deserve credit

I'm 6' 5/6ish - but still way up the BMI chart!
Cycled to work maybe 10 times this summer - a 50 mile round trip - first go was 5 hours - last time was 4.. On a modified dutch bike with upgraded wheel and axles obviously! Running and cycling is where weight is really a big problem - so I don't run and just use a cross trainer for cardio. I like cycling and plan to try the Coast to Coast next year but I need to be at a reasonable weight - another 30-40kg off I think before tackling a long steep Pennine hill
This is where I am at an advantage on a rowing machine - where power not weight counts.
Reading this thread has inspired me to try some shorter sprints and or intervals. Seems to be the next step - I do fancy a crack at the 7 min barrier.

your certainly on the right path and the Concept II is perfect for tall people with big long limbs and its also fantastic for all round fitness. Well done with the weight lossI'm 6' 5/6ish - but still way up the BMI chart!

I assume everyone has seen this! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVl0Zt-kZys
Large amount of discussion about how '100m doesn't mean anything' record-wise. (Personally I think it does), but would be good to see how someone like that does for a 2K time.

Not sure if much of a correlation. I could pull 1:08 splits at Uni but probably wouldn't have bettered 6:40 for 2k as I wasn't very fit at the time.Large amount of discussion about how '100m doesn't mean anything' record-wise. Update on the 1MC... Just trundling along doing 6k or 30" pieces max in a session. Back is improving all the time, especially when doing the lighter stuff. Any intense work though and it starts up again, fixed by lots of stretching.
Still, 822532m done. Need to average just over 11.8k a week for the remaining 15 weeks of the year. Finishing strong with a 2k PB would have been nice, not hobbling my way over the line, but that's next year's goal I think. Anyone else still going with this/completed it?

Hi Guys,
As some of you may remember I purchased a C2 and coupled it with my Life Fitness CT for workouts, starting on the CT for 45 mins then on the C2 for around the same. I was averaging 18k on the C2 and 15k on the CT a week, doing a steady pace on both. Never fully blitzed 2k to collect a best PB.
However, I have cooled it off on the C2 due to gaining too much muscle mass upstairs. My Thomas Pink Athletic shirts, size 15 , were getting to grippy on me. Personally, I did not want to bulk up upstairs, but couldn't stop it gaining on. I think I never fully or took time to understanding the resistant levels on the C2, always had it on damper 8 and drag was 132 to 135. On a lower Damper it felt an easier pull when rowing, but then you read the resistance is determined on how hard you pull. Seem to recall its to do with the vacuum of air going in to the fan assembly?. So is the Damper setting altering the amount of air going to the fan and how hard you pull can effect this too,,,, so its both, correct??.
Stats, ( as you guys were talking body weight ), 50 yrs old, 5'10", 75kg .
Any experts please ?..
Cheers.

Think of it like a bike - you can achieve the same speed by either spinning a low gear fast or a higher one more slowly. When you crank the erg fan up from 5 to 8 you are dragging more air into the fan and pushing a "higher gear".

Incidentally, Ross slightly regrets not giving the 100m another go, as he reckons he could have maybe pulled down to a 12.5 - he would have been possibly the first person to see a sub 1 minute low pull, which is amazing.

Hi Fezza 1MC has been on the back burner for me from 6th July for work, holiday, moving house, decorating, & sorting out garden & allotment.Still, 822532m done. But I hope to back on it next week or week after.
Im on 666,176 so I'm behind schedule now & need to average 25k+ a week to finish & Christmas socials will no doubt hurt that a bit...
