I've bought one of these http://www.powertrainer.co.uk/ to do this challenge http://twentypullups.com/ for my NY resolution. (looking forward to having some 13yr old wannabe-navyseal-septic criticise my technique on youtube hehe)
Have you received it yet? Is it any good?
Yes and yes! smile

Does exactly what it says on the tin - works using a cantilever movement so doesnt stress the doorframe and I can put it up / take it down in seconds (plus the missus is happy as there is no holes etc). The idea is to leave it up so that I can do several throughout the day/night. Putting a chair underneath also helps when doing negatives.

Much much better than those bars that fit in between the door itself. I'm very happy with it.
Am tempted! Does it leave marks on the doorframe at all?

Swim 10k in an outdoor comp and hold my own.
How quick a time are we talking here? I saw the mile race on TV and am tempted, reckon I could do it in 30 mins without too much bother and am very tempted to give it a go. So my 10k time would be around 3.5-4 hours, would this be ridiculously slow?
Nope, I used to train long distance outdoor swimmers. And that would be a very good time. You can go a bit quicker indoors because the cold water wouldn't be slowing you down over time. You'll have to put in a fair bit of training for it though, and other cardio work (running/cross training) will help improve your times.
Glad you answered this as I have no idea of time I just enter events and work out areas I need to work on, I have done the Bournemouth International Tri and charity swim to Isle of Wight and just went for it with no idea of time just as long as I am racing someone i ll keep going. Could you direct us of where and how I can enter outdoor swims?

Assuming you want to do a swim
down south then get in touch with the BLDSA (British long distance swimming association). Don't let the name fool you - they organise everything from 1 mile lake swims to channel crossings. They will provide you with details of all swims coming up (mainly may to sept) and how you can enter.

There are a couple of things you need in order to take part in organised outdoor swimming. Insurance (achieved by joining the
bldsa) and a boat crew (a boatman and a lifesaver), you can provide your own but in tidal water they would have to be a seasoned crew or you'd never keep course.

I'd suggest you go for a lake or loch swim instead. There is an annual
swim at Windermere, which would be very challenging, but they normally do lake conniston the same
weekend which would be a better first swim. You will need to complete entry forms etc.

In short, The bldsa will provide advice on training, the event itself, insurance, a boat crew, Judges and referees, medical
staff and all other paraphernalia needed to make sure these things are well organised and safe.

Very simple.

There's a park behind my house, I'm going to walk around it for half an hour a day 3 or 4 times a week at least.

Doesn't sound like a lot but it's free, and it gets me out of the house.

I guess that would depend on how ornate your doorframes are - there would be pressure exerted on the frame, so if you had lots of intricate woodwork, it might, but if your frames are flat there would be no problem. For what its worth, I have grooves in my doorframes (typical Edwardian) and it hasn't marked yet. I can imagine it happening though, if it sits on an edge for too long.

Yeah, that was my thinking. I might get one and place cloth at all contact points. Would that make it unsafe to use in any way?

Yep. I want to sell the house some time in the future and not have two indentations near the top of the frame. It'd be at eye-height, too!

Pullup challenge? My PB is 100 in 11 min 30 sec; this was back in the summer when I was fit (and a stone lighter), now I would struggle to beat 15 mins.

Firstly...

Be able to train consistently without injury.

Secondly...

Run 200m sub 22s
Run 400m sub 49s
Run 800m in 1.59.9s!
Be able to run one loop of 500m on sand dunes without dying spectacularly and ruining the remainder of every session I do with this distance in!

Just done this Animal, 10min 58secs for 100 heaves (chin-ups), to be honest caught me out as thought i'd just smash 10 sets of 10 every minute but have trained fair bit today.

5 x 10 Overgrasp Heaves, 5K Row, Plyometric legs, press ups, ropes and abs.

Going to give that 300 a go tommorrow.

I hope its as simple as that! I guess I can live in hope!

Not sure to be honest - its always been an exercise I've steered clear of mostly because I couldnt do it without cheating, and the places I have generally trained at have not had the pull up machines that provide assistance. This time round I've enlisted a great personal trainer twice a week to help me achieve my goal (at Epsom College - £20 per session, which I thought was a steal). I needed to set the bar somewhere, so 20 sounded good. If I can get 20 clean one's done in the time I've set, I will be a very happy chap. If I can do more than that, then I will be positively in love with my reflection biggrin (also want to get my 5k down to 26min - forgot to mention that)

Keep us updated!

I'll order one next week when the snow clears so I can be guaranteed to get it delivered when I'm in.
