I can't believe there's been a 22 page thread on protein shakes- get a cheap one from a reputable source, they're all much of a muchness. What you do in the gym will far more of a bearing than what protein you procure.
Thanks for that imput. /thread closed. I think not.
Correct actually. The people who get hung up on which protein powder is best are mostly small/weak/skinny/skinnyfat. True story.

I've lost count of the number of guys in the gym I see religiously taking their protein shake pre and post workout while forever having an 80kg bench, being unable to squat an empty bar without falling over and neglecting 50% of muscle groups.

Thats a big brush you are trying to tar everyone with there! Seriously you maybe correct 50% of the time or less!

The biggest and most lean folk I know are always without a doubt fascinated with nutrition and how to get that extra 10%.

Perhaps fascinated with nutrition yes, but people who are genuinely big and lean do not get hung up on which brand of protein they use! Other aspects such as having appropriate overall macros/training properly/deciding what kind of bicycle to ride are far more important!

Supplement companies only stay in business because they feed consumers rubbish about how muscles will catabolise into nothing if you don't have x many scoops of xyz protein within 30seconds post workout, or that said protein is vital upon waking to avoid wilting to skin and bone! The brand of whey one uses is maybe 0.01% of the overall picture.

Taste is probably the only thing we should really be discussing in relation to different protein powders. Effectiveness between two brands would be hearsay at best.

Then there's the placebo effect to take into account when claims such as one brand helping recovery more than another.

I agree. Although I still like to research and sometimes vary my protein sources, keeps things interesting. The way I see it, it's a hobby and if you compare it to other examples - photographers are always looking at new lenses, golfers always want the latest clubs - bodybuilders have their supplements!

Thought id jump on a protein shake this month as im not eating enough.

So off I went to GNC (madness I hear some of you say) BUT picked up a 4kg bucket of the USN Muscle Fuel pro anabolic (lean muscle gainer) for.... £48.50 as they price match the local indepedent down the road.

Seriously though they are knocking it out at £91.98, who the hell buys it at that rate?!

Also thought I would give their Protein Dessert a try:

http://www.usn.co.uk/product/Protein-Shakes-Meal-R...

Tastes excellent and can be taken whenever.

Just checked out the USN website, the RRP is £82! That's is outrageous, and £92 is just plain stupid. Honestly if anyone pays that they must be a complete mug.

"It sez anabolic on it so it's just like roidz, innit! Defo worth best part of £100 then".

I do broadly agree with you.

Personally I go on contents and price. Taste doesn't really matter since I just gulp it down.

I personally go for the cheap and cheerful Myprotein.

I know! Madness! The thing that got me is that GNC have the cheek to mark it up again!

Some of the prices for certain things are phenomenal even with a discount card.

But I suppose if its selling why not.

I wonder if it costs that much to manufacture?

Some of the RRPs are just crazy for loads of stuff. Buy online the price will never be that.

Dont know how much you paid for that dessert , but I have literally (30minutes ago) just bought some off eBay. For 19.99 and that's buy one get one free, so 10 quid a tub. Hope its nice.!

Whilst I agree with this, it is a thread about protein shakes? I.e going too a subaru thread about which rods to buy and saying forget that get a Evo they break less is a bit silly. It's not answering the original question or contributing usefully about the subject matter. No matter how correct the advice is.

http://www.bodyshapersfitness.com/meal_replacement... I brought this in chocolate malt flavour it's drinkable but it doesn't taste as nice as PHD strawberry cheesecake. It tastes kind of like chocolate flavour porridge. Also I know nothing about this stuff is this any good I know it's cheap so probably not.

Received a 4kg tub of Matrix mass gainer today. Normally I don't bother with mass gainers, it's cheaper to grind oats into protein powder but at a sale price of £25 for the amount offered, it seemed like a worthwhile punt.

I bought the strawberry flavor and it's not too bad - mixes easily enough and packs a lot of calories and protein into each serving. The calories seem to come from oats and maize rather than simple carb sugars which is good and for the price, it's pretty good.
