I Ran my first 5k on Friday in 36mins...was mega happy with that.
Then again yesterday morning and took 6 mins off it at a nice comfortable pace.

I'm Over the moon tbh, What seems like just a few weeks ago I was only able to do 1k as a walk-run-walk-run type of affair.

I've registered for parkrun now and booked on two 5k events over the next few weeks.

Loving it.
Fantastic. I am not much further down the road but in many way my first 5k timed (over 30mins) was more exciting than my first 10k (1hr 2 with a friend) or my second one yesterday (a tad under 54mins)

Well done, y2kblade!

For me, today is "Week 7, Day 1" .... what's that in Gazelle %, benzo?
That's then 2.5miles/25 minutes tonight. I'm sure my 5km goal in 30 minutes is achievable now, and I too really struggled in the early stages. I've surprised myself!

One thing I've not fully overcome: shin splints. How/when will it/they completely stop?

I managed my first 30 minutes non-stop last night. Had I not had to slow for a couple of crossings, I would have covered my 5km, but was 90m short!!

awesome effort there y2kblade, really impressed.

5pot, 70.3% keep it up.

i've had another week off, my wife was away so leaving the kids wasnt an option, she has returned with plague so rather than leap into week 4, i'm going to repeat week 3.

the weather has been a lot better recently and it's been lighter of an evening, cant wait to get out there.

one question.; pants?

i normally wear my baselayer and a pair of shorts over the top, boxers tend to rub. any advice?

Running shorts tend to have an inner sewn in any way - commando under these.
When wearing leggings I wear my running shorts underneath them.

If you want to wear pants => leggings => shorts for modesty reasons, then the Runderwear brand of pants are supposed to be good (as in non-chaffing!).

Thanks ewenm

i'm a fan of 2 layers, i'll check lout runderwear, chafing is an issue. i do need to get some running shorts anyway and it'll be too warm for baselayer soon.

Cheers all.

Ref some of the comments about wet/cold and what to wear.....so far I've only had three sessions that weren't freezing cold with rain/sleet/wind.

I always wear the same gear regardless.....Baggy shorts with a T-Shirt and a lightweight breathable shell jacket over the top.

Just get out there, you soon warm up once running...stop overthinking this stuff and "just do it".

Here's to the warmer rain of summer, I can't wait to run without my nose running

Shin splints are bloody annoying, I used to suffer from them for many years and when I started running I just sort of accepted it.
Certain stretches before running helped but the biggest benefit was from a change of trainers to something more comfort orientated and not overdoing it too quickly.
I have no problems now but that's been a combination of building it up slowly and a decent amount of weight loss.

Thanks. I think that covers it! frown
I lost >25kg a couple of years ago and got down to 88kg, but due to illness I put about 1/2 back on and lost a LOT of fitness, so I'm now about 105kg. eek
I'd like to get down to 80kg ultimately, and STAY there.
I've not been pushing too hard, too soon, as I know I can't, but I think my running shoes may need looking at as I'm not sure they provide enough support. They're OK for in the gym, but not as running shoes - for me. Perhaps a task for Sat morning.

I was 107Kg when I started, I'm now about 80Kg, it certainly helps with running and any problems!
I know I had very supportive shoes when I started and switched to more comfortable ones and they helped, but I didn't find they lasted very long. When I went to a running shop to have my gait checked they told me I need a shoe that is somewhere between comfort and support, typical.

3 runs over 9 weeks is 27 runs.

you were about to do run 1 of week 7 when you posted so 6 weeks complete plus one for week 7 = 19/27 = 0.704 = 70.4%

don't cheat yourself !

after 10 days off, i was out last night for another week 3 run, expecting to be in a state. It was noticeably better than expected. will pop another week 3 on friday and prepare for week 4 on sunday or monday.

usually i'm out in a baggy hoodie, but i had an old football shirt on over my baselayer. the beanie came off after 10 mins.

at this rate I'll be doing week 6 in Oslo, likely in the hotel gym ( cheating). although as my gazelle factor increases, i might hit the streets to get the scandinavian strumpet swooning at my majestic physique!!

i'm leaning towards a PH 10k team for 2017, could we all meet up and do something for a common charity? i reckon we'd get a good turn out.

10k is within my reach, but a "team" event?! yikes

Good luck for the continued training, Gazelle Benzo!

Whilst at my GP today I asked about shin splints. He's a regular marathon runner. Yep, I've inflamed tendons on my shins.... so, physio, ice packs and anti-inflamatory drugs and gel (like Ibuleve).

Great. frown

I'll have to settle for using my road bike this weekend instead....

i meant more along the lines of us doing the great north run or similar. I'm sure PH HQ could wrangle sponsorship / tshirts ( with gazelle imagery).

Make sure you put the treadmill on an incline to simulate running outside!

I did this inadvertently. I wondered when I started running outside why I could run faster than on the treadmill, at the same heart rate. I figured it was because I was getting hot.

So I bought a fan, started turning the rad off in the room a few hours earlier, opening windows... Still the same.

In the end I downloaded a spirit level for my phone and stuck it on the treadmill. 2 degrees. Just two degrees from vertical meant that while I was running 10K I was also ascending 350 odd meters!

I think it is due to floorboard sag.

To fairly accurately simulate wind resistance (I've looked this up!) under 8 minutes a mile pace, don't bother. Wind resistance is effectively negligible.

Over that pace, 1 degree of slope is about right. But check your floorboards first.

my route is fairly hilly anyway, so 1-2deg should be pretty accurate.

if the weather is good i might just go for a run down to Oslo harbour and past all the boats. must try to avooid getting an icecream though!

the sun is shining so I think i'll pound some concrete tonight and prepare for week 4, starting monday night.

Have the ice cream and enjoy it. Life is for living and this is a permanent lifestyle change and not a fad. Once your runs are longer and faster you will be burning so much calories you won't be able to eat enough to stop yourself becoming a rake!
