Couch to 5k - any good?
Discussion
week 4 completed last night,
freezing drizzle, delightful.
max speed down from 13.2kmph to 12.6 but avg speed up from 7.2 to 7.5 got 4.25km covered in 30 mins, quite chuffed with myself.
going to do another week 4 on wednesday and again fri/saturday.
dreading the 20min run at the end of week 5 so i reckon some more 'easy ones' will help with stamina.

will try the running thread once this is over.
hows everyone else doing?

Good going, Ben!
Yesterday was week 8, day 1 for me.
5 min brisk w/up walk, then 2.75miles in 28 minutes, or 28 minutes running non-stop.
My daughter followed me around on her rollerblades, so there was no way I was going to stop and look like a failure!
So effing close.... 2.68miles (4.3km) in 28 minutes! That's 112 METRES short. Effing effer. Grrrrr.....
Anywhoooo .... considering that on week 1, day 1, I was PRAYING for the end of the 1st 60 seconds jogging, because I was fooked, I'd say that's progress!
Unlike young Benzo, however, I've not got any thinner.
In other news my new shooz I picked up on Friday in the UK = MUCH , MUCH better, so a big thanks to "Up & Running" in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, for their help (gait analysis, fitting, etc.) there.

excellent effort there, so close. you'll smash those final 112metres at run 2, like you say week 1 run 1 was the hardest 90seconds of a runners life. looking back it just amazing.
i have so much weight to lose, i have to achieve something. i think i may have a metabolism now, i previosly believed that it had either stopped or just given up!! i bought a pair of running shorts on sunday as my cargo shorts just didnt cut it. tried on the XXL, too big, the XL too big. the first item of clothing without an X in years, nearly brought a tear to my eye.
shoes DO make all the difference too.
i'm having a rest day, looking forwards to tomorrow nights run, hopefully it'll stop fking raining.

Week 1 day 1 just done. Made it, but last two 60s were really tough. Ankle's hurt more then most, I can still feel my legs working.
welcome aboard Williamp. it does get better /easier. i advise getting some proper shoes, they do help.keep it up and update on here with your progress and general silliness.
keep going.
WilliamP: Welcome aboard!
As you'll have seen at least from Benzo's and my posts, it DOES get easier. I never thought I'd take up running. I'm 46 soon.
Cheers, Benzo! Well done on the lack of 'X' in the clothes size, too!
Week 8, Day 2 tonight.
The target's the same as I had before, so 2.75mi in 28 minutes. That 112metres equivalent I was short on Mon will make all the difference, psychologically, if I can do that tonight!

you can do it.
i'm off out for another week 4 tonight, no additional SG points for me.
it's pissing with rain and i really cannot be bothered but at 8pm, i'll be out of the door.
Williamp, you are 3.7% of the way to becoming both a sexual gazelle and a magnificent bd. These are the highest accolades anyone can be bestowed...FACT. as each run finishes, your percentage increases.
each run gets easier, and you will have off days, but it's staggering how quickly the stamina comes and the pace increases.
good luck.
week 1 day 2. Felt better, and it seemed to go quicker then before.
Anyhow, as you seem to like stats, here are mine:
39
5ft 9
109kg
size 9
DBR9
1.9
9"
Slalom 0.99g
Oh, this Laura person I keep hearing when I run. Is she...you know...???
For many years in my late teens and early 20s I was 80kg. Would be nice to get somewhere there again.

i made some rash decisions last night,
1) i went for a week 5 run 1, to see how i got on.
2) i saw blondey and decided to follow her, not in a rapey kind of way, but to see what other routes wer out there.
to summarise, I've found the perfect route, nice surface, minor undulations, no fences or gates and minimal road crossings.
the 3rd 5 minutes were fine, I expected to be dying, but it was alright, i even ran uphill. max speed up (13.1 kmph) avg speed up (8.5kmph)
from having a wobble last week and seriously questioning my ability to continue, i'm doing fine!
48% and I feel great.
i was advised on a couple of books about running and pushing human capabilities, both by Christopher McDOugall
'Born to run' and 'Natural Born Heroes'.
i'll read and review, they may inspire. Not that i need it, i'm 48% sexual gazelle.

did week 2 run 2 tonight. The first run of this week felt like the first run of last week. Better tonight. A few observations:
I tried a different route. Laura didn't like this, and made me run up hills, and walk down them. Sorry Laura
Its harder to run, but I am recovering quicker, and don't need to full 2 minutes walk.
I stopped drinking a few weeks ago. Cut down on good food. Started running. I have put on 1kg since last week. Not fair...

Great to see that the BBC have invented a new fitness program that's easy to get started and follow.......

I keep trying and trying, but I just can't crack the 5km in 30 minutes.
My route's been well trodden in the last 9-10 weeks, but yesterday the sun was high in the sky and there wasn't much wind which didn't help...
Time: 33:36
Oh, cock.
I didn't stop though. "I just kept on running." [/Forrest Gump]
I'll keep going until I crack the 5km in 30 minutes!
Good luck to everyone else!

I had the same problem, getting the pace right is key, you can do it, you just need to practice until you get the feel for the pace. It really as simple as running faster, but knowing how fast is the challenge. You could try doing what I call a destruction run, run the fastest pace you can for as long as you can and when your ready to stop don't, keep going, win the mental battle, if your not dry heaving and light headed at the end of the 5km you haven't pushed hard enough.
