Couch to 5k - any good?

inspiring stuff, i've treated my body like a skip for too long. i do 3km walks at lunchtime and then try to either run or be on my bike every evening. i want to lose another 20kg but anoything under 95kg is a bonus.
I'm sticking around in here to inspire others. I'm not quick. I'm still 12m off a sub 2 hr half marathon. But I'm bloody working at it and I feel so much better for doing it. It's a bit evangelical, but it has really turned my entire life approach around. I'm now focusing more on trails than road running and maybe, just maybe, I might end up doing a 50k trail/off road ultra marathon next year. A trail half marathon is 100% on the cards. Love running on bush tracks and over a variety of terrain..
week 9 run 2 complete.
i ran 4.62km in 30 minutes, there were slow bits, i must admit but i kept going. lots of other runners out last night, i didnt want to walk past them so i fought through the pain / dizziness / hallucinations.
380m short, was raging, that's fk all.
new route on Saturday morning, with some mates, likely hungover. i cant wait.
and then what? this isnt over for me, i'm going to increase distance, increase speed and keep on running in a fat sweaty forrest gump kind-of way. i've serviced my mountain bike, and found a 10mile route, so i'll mix up the running and biking. and see where it takes me.

Never really visited this part of the forum, clicked on it accidentally and this thread jumped out!
Having got out of shape over the past couple of years, I decided to get back in shape 2 months or so ago. I started running and on the first run I had to walk for a couple of stretches just running a mile.
2 weeks ago, I ran 10k in pretty much spot on an hour, that was about 8 weeks into running 3, maybe 4 times a week.
Feel great!

I took about 9 weeks to do 5km, c25km, then another 6 weeks before 10km by following apps on my phone.

That's about where I'm heading. Now at 8km in 48 mins (last night), and moving to week 3 of 10km training next week. I took about 9 weeks to do 5km, c25km, then another 6 weeks before 10km by following apps on my phone.
I felt like I could have continued last night but didn't want to injure myself right before Le Mans - leaving tomorrow.
Day one of C25K last night completed. Am running on a treadmill as we have one at home. As someone who has done pretty much no excercise for a few months and wasnt particularly in good shape before that it was hard work but not so hard that it put me off. Rest day today then day 2 tomorrow!

I like being able to see the countdown for now
I found these podcasts to be really good http://www.c25k.com/podcasts.htmI started running this year after realising that the combination of being almost 45 years old with a very sedentary desk job were not good for me. Powered by a combination of the Radio 4 comedy podcast, Kermode and Mayo's film reviews and the infinite monkey cage, I just went out and did some running, not particularly structured but I worked out some useful loops around and near my house and then got the wife to nag me into going regularly.......
I thoroughly recommend those podcasts as companions for exercise
I have now done 3 10k races with fastest time of just under 55 minutes and have just (as in a few minutes ago), ran 5k in 25 min 14 seconds.
I had already made a concerted effort over the last 2-3 years to lose some weight - better eating, (much) less alcohol and more squash/gym work had dropped me from 84 - 74 kg (I'm 5'11") and given me some base fitness which has helped but I really hadn't run properly before, just the odd half-hearted attempt to start which never went anywhere. It's taken some time but I'm now actually enjoying it, except when it rains hard.

Run two completed last night, not as hard as Run one. On Run one when the voice said I had two runs left I was gutted, this time I was ok, not sure if mental or just better hydrated or energy level but hey who cares, I made it!
Will be switching out the NHS App though, I stream my music through Deezer and it lowers the volume when telling me to run etc but then doesn't raise the music volume after, it is a real pain as it gets quieter each time, I could barely hear my music at the end and the woman was yelling at me, if I wanted to be yelled at by a woman I would piss the wife off
Run number three of week one tomorrow then I move onto the week two program. Is this just the same as week one or does the duration increase?

Your first times always going to be hard, your body needs to get used to it. Your body will change how it behaves, your muscle fibres will change, your metabolism will change. Its a gradual process and its why you need to build up to a continues 30minute run. nutrition, sleep hydration and mental attitude are massive factors too. Often if im in the mood for a run I run.

"Week two
Begin with a brisk five-minute walk, then alternate 90 seconds of running with two minutes of walking, for a total of 20 minutes."

There seem to be quite a few variations of C25K but the differences are fairly small. Generally you do the same thing 3 times in the week, and then each week the running distance/time increases, but usually with less reps. I found it amazing how much easier the third one of each week was compared to the first.
