Good going thus far OC- what is the aim of your training- is it primarily for looks?

Yeah looks and health.

I love weight lifting just as an excuse to challenge myself physically after sitting in an office-day-in-day-out.

I'm not too worried about overall strength and whilst I want to gain a bit more size I've no interest in becoming a monster.

I always find I feel so much better in myself when I exercise be it running or weights.

Great thread.

I've gone from being the big lad at uni (sports teams - 14st, 6ft), to being the fat lad at work, to being 'slim' and am now back training after an extended injury period (2 knee operations). Unfortunately the knee ops have completely restricted my CV.

At the moment I'm training for a bit of size and strength - to be honest if I could keep the look I have right after I have trained chest/shoulders I'd be a happy chap and stop there; unfortunately after a couple of hours I'm back to being a bit soft around the edges.

I'm planning to carry on the weights for 6 more weeks, then from mid May start to lose fat for the summer. Hopefully in 6 weeks I'll be able to do CV again!

I struggle with diet - I love food! Diet really is my downfall in all of this.

Well good luck Marf although I'd suggest you'd see the best weight loss with a mixture of weights and cardio.

Weights are bloody great for losing weight with!

Although diet is 75% of the end result and will get you to your goals quicker than anything else!

In the opinion of the PH masses should I throw in 30g of protein shake before bed on the nights I am not training...

Basically I am riding my bike to work and running 3 or 4 times a week so i don't think the extra 100 cals will do too much harm. At least they are "good" cals...

I'd suggest unless you're doing damage to your body you probably don't need it. Simple CV will most likely mean you get tired as opposed to damaged if you like.

Are you weight lifting right now?

Right now I'm sitting at home on the laptop wink

This week is slightly unusual as I'm working massive OT but normally I will do weights 4 times a week, running 3 times a week and riding my bike for an hour a day 4 times a week...

If you're training heavy 4 times a week I'd personally use protein everyday since on the off days your body will still be recovering.

The truth of it is, it won't make a massive difference either way but I'd personally do it to make sure you've got the bases covered as it were.

Yea, can't do me any harm can it. I'll just replace my pre-bed coffee (I know, but I am caffeine immune. Years of drinking Red Bull and Kick as a kid) with a protein shake. To be honest I've upped the cardio massively and kept the calories the same, lower in fact if you take into account all the crap I have cut out recently...

Also, on a side note. Only 4 pints this Friday....

You do realise a coffee before bed is seriously going to harm your training? While you (and I) might be able to fall asleep after a coffee your brain and body are still functioning at too high a rate therefore not resting properly.

When I'm losing fat I change to green tea in place of proper tea and coffee - it's supposed to have some benefit, can't remember what though. redface It makes a nice change anyway.
After six or eight weeks with no tea or coffee, the first real coffee is smashing. Almost makes it worth going without.

Green tea is supposed to stimulate the metabolism.

Personally I just drink tea and coffee being careful with the milk and no sugar all year round. It doesn't seem to have an effect!

It's one of the things I've never been willing to give up!
