Still get numb bum now twenty years on after long journeys.

Well that was an interesting afternoon, lying in bed at the hospital I noticed that I felt very damp, went to the loo and noticed I left a small blood puddle on the floor, turns out the dressing applied by the student nurse had fell out.

So, with slightly worn off pain meds I went through the whole excruciating process again. frown

But that isn't the best bit, not by a long chalk.

It turns out that the pain medication that they were giving me (Codine) causes constipation, which would explain my lack of bowel movements! The nurses then pointed out that this will put a lot of pressure on the wound when I need to go to the loo.

As soon as I got home I took a Sennakot at the nurse's advice, unfortunately this did nothing to soften the housebrick that was wedged up there. I discovered the presence of said housebrick when I very slowly and carefully eased it out, at the same time managing to eject the packing from the wound for the second time today! Woo hoo.

I rang the hospital and the girl on the phone suggested I just pull the dressing out and reapply, not bloody likely when I don't have my Tramadol yet!!

So, I am now about to try and go to sleep, slowly oozing a delightful mixture of blood and wound juice.

I'm so happy I could just die. smile

Ah yes, the post operative log - remember it well. I didn't go for over ten days (two operations within two days, coupled with numerous painkillers meant I was pretty bunged up) and the resultant creation must have been in excess of 100 courics.

I found that the packing did tend to fall out using the conventional tape/gauze approach. In the end, the nurses used a combination of Sorbsan coupled with Mepilex Borders. That kept the wound packing nice and secure, but I'm led to believe it was an expensive combination, so the nurses might be reluctant to go for it in all cases.

They packed my wound with a seaweed!
It was ment to speed tissue growth.
Hmmm can't confirm or deny it.
But six months on my front says probably not.

Had the op twice, the first time about 10 years ago. Was on hols in Jersey and it just got to the stage where I couldn't sit down. Cut was made 4" in and then as all the above packed on a daily basis. Poxy thing came back about two years afterwards so had to go through it all again. Was driving over 50000 niles a year at the time so i guess that was partly to blame.
Good luck..With any luck it wont come back!

Well I had the dressing redone today, it still hurts like hell, all this talk of it getting better each time they do it is rubbish!

Today's effort seemed to hurt more than the first two. I hate this!

On the plus side, I've found a couple of E39's that are available cheap locally, may well invest in one as a bit of a luxo-barge for a year or so.

mate of mine has just recovered from his third(i think) op on his. His was rather deep I believe, and the first time he got no advice at all on how to clean & dress - he was initially told to leave the packing in!!!!.

That one got infected and back in again, then they failed to clean it out fully so back in for a third time. This time, his wife and a nurse friend of ours managed the whole clean&re-pack, and hopefully it has now fully healed.

He really did have what appeared to be a grenade wound for a second a-hole.

Make sure you get the best possible 'service' to keep it clean so it can heal.

I had this way back in 1982, and still have a PN sinus (open hole) to this day. Only washing with soap and water after every crap keeps the infection away.

Can't you fill it with silicone sealant?

Sticks.

Re Codeine, yep, it does that. Ibuprofen might be better, though harsh on your gut sometimes.

Years ago a nurse recommended a couple of pints of bitter rather than sennakot or similar. Works well, not keg stuff though.

Second time I had it....no pain on repacking (not that you should look forward to getting it possibly a second time).... Probably because they'd hacked out all the nerves etc the first time.

I found it hard to drive....coil overs and a pilonidal cyst do not mix!!

Random question, yesterday the wound only hurt when I moved in particular ways, and of course, excruciatingly on re-packing.

Today the wound is becoming uncomfortable at all times, even on a combination of Tramadol and Diclafenic which makes me worry about what it would feel like if I was going "drug free".

Did anyone else's become more painful in the first few days before dulling down? I'm concerned in case it's getting infected although I suppose I'll know for sure tomorrow when it's packed again!

One point - the nurses are soaking the wound packing with saline solution before pulling it out, aren't they? I can't tell you how much more painful it is pulling out 'dry' packing when a thirty second soak in saline means it comes out pretty easily.
