Been experimenting with the IPS paddles to identify "shortcuts" in getting bits of functionality out of the gear box.

Identified two so far...

  • Holding both paddles active for a few seconds switches you to neutral. Not sure of the point of that one...
  • Holding the up paddle for a few seconds will switch you back to D mode to short cut the usual delay after using the paddle shift to go up or down gears. That one is useful.
Any others people know of? I haven't been able to get any others through paddle shift combinations so far.

Isn't this sort of thing usually in the manual?

From Neutral, if you press the Down paddle do you get reverse?

Could allow you to select Reverse without pressing the centre console buttons if it does?

Is this a quicker way to take the car out of gear whilst stopped in traffic/at lights? smile

TBH - not seen a good use for this yet. And doing it at speed would not be a good idea... (assuming it allows you to...)

Nope, in case you selected the wrong one and shot off backwards from the lights! You have to make a deliberate movement to the centre console. Even then, it can happen as Parky demonstrated at the Lotus Festival at Snett a couple of years back.

It does allow you, and it also allows you to reselect drive at speed too.

Really? I remember reading in the manual that it promised much pain and suffering to the gear box if you selected N while the car was moving.

Might be wrong, but...

How long does it take to go back to D after using the paddles ? My current 335i takes around 5 second but I recently drove an Audi Q5 and that took nearly 30 seconds

In sport mode, 30 secs. It assumes that if you are 'on it' then you'd have needed to change gear within that period. If you hadn't then you then only need D.

For normal (in mine), it takes about 15s and about 1-2s if you apply the "shortcut"

I found that if you spin the car 360 degrees, the gearbox drops into neutral which I thought was nice of Lotus. smile
