Yes, having thumbed through a copy in the local newsagents I was disappointed (but not surprised) to find that it was another of Autocar's PaintShop Pro "specials". It's also a bit "back to the future" - see an airticle on a drop head Evora back for 2008 and note the bit right at the very end as well (didn't wrok out quite like that but nearly)! http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/concept-cars/lot...

At least J-MG has confirmed that it will happen but for now I'll be saving the near £4 for the magazine so I can spend it on Shell VPower Nitro+ for my Evora S1!

It will be interesting to see how Lotus re-engineer the seatbelt mounting frame and put a hood on the car. The mock up does look very nice though. Roll on the Evora 400 DHC!

Starting today there is a three day press launch of the 400 up at Hethel. No doubt we'll hear from PH/Haymarket in due course.

I'm not sure what to make of that review. Poor gear change, everything else is improved but the competition is further ahead?

I need occasional back seats which is why I'm still looking at an Evora. This fully specced comes in at close to £80,000. A Cayman GTS really well specced comes in at £70,000 (though without the rear seats) whilst a base 991 can be imo lightly specced to £83,000. So a Cayman GTS v base 911 v Evora 400 comparison please.

So virtually the worlds best handling car...let down by a poxy gearchange (my Exige S is superb, my Evora S is poor, so it is in the set up)...and a few minor niggles in the cabin.
SORT THE GEARCHANGE LOTUS! Forget the cables, develop some metal link rods...its not a race car, but a road car.

interesting he says takes some getting used to.

I am on my 5th lotus now so am well used to them but I think for a driver coming from German cars they are sufficiently different to need some time in to find the sweet spot.

I work on two basis:
1. After long experience of the press I have learnt to never trust a word to say. They print articles based on what sells, not the truth.
2. These sort of cars are way more talented than us mere mortal drivers so get the one you prefer, they are all more than good enough. Which ever you choose will be more than quick enough to cope with whatever you throw at it.

I know I don't need a new 400hp Evora but must admit I am getting very close to getting one.

It certainly took me a long time to get used to my Evora, having only experienced a Japanese sportscar before.

In fact I found it impossible to get much of an idea of the Lotus from a relatively short test drive as I found it so different to what I was used to, but ended up trusting the journalist write ups in terms of handling. They certainly got that bit right.

I think it will take a long time to match the competition on quality, albeit things seem to be improving. A poor gearchange is always going to be a handicap on this sort of car - shame they could not have focussed more on this as part of the "upgrade" - at that price point and in the face of the usual suspect I can understand why new customers would be wary.

The car certainly sounds to me like a significant improvement, and having spent 3 years with an Evora, and had I the cash to buy new, I would struggle to find another car in that sector I'd rather own - other than an Evora roadster with an easily removeable roof....................

if you're buying new the 400 will never compare with a 911 it just doesn't make financial sense. IMO Lotus should have 'tweaked' the performance from the S and kept the price down. The quality & finish just isn't in the same league. There'll be a strong demand for used once the cars come down to below 60K but realistically who's going to buy new?

Wow you are lucky, when did you get to sit in one? I haven't had chance but have a test drive booked.

If you're buying new at all,I'd suggest that the financials aren't your top priority...

IMHO people who really like driving might be tempted to buy a new 400 over a 911 if they can see that it's not too much of a compromise.People who have exhausted the Audi range and want another safe choice to show the world how well they're doing will keep choosing base 911s...

I have seen a couple of 911 GT3 RS4's on track and they did excite me,but they are in a whole other price band to the Base 911 and Evora.

Tbh. I never understand the issues with real world useability on the old model. Mind is a daily driver doing 20k miles a year including school runs, shopping and business trips.

I'm using mine as a daily too - but there are definitely a few dodgy ergonomic details that I don't have to put up with on any of my other cars. And at this price point that really matters IMHO.

I do not understand the comments about "why would you buy a new one"...with the inference that "you`d be mad to put your money into that"...what nonesense. Any new car depreciates heavily, and medium to longer term Evora`s seem to have strong residuals...far better than the percieved competition.
