Hello All,

Its that painful time of year again...

There are threads about which company to go to etc, but I was speaking with a broker yesterday and they said beware of some of the high street companies, because in the case of an unfortunate event, they will use one of "their" repair shops, which most likely will not be that familiar with the cars. I appreciate that it is the insurers responsibility to repair the car to the condition it was in prior to the event, but you cannot always see what lurks under the skin, although there is no guarantee that a specialist will get it right either.

Does anyone use a mainstream who let you choose the repair shop?

I believe that you can choose whoever you wish to make repairs - the law was changed not to long ago.

Can anyone confirm that? (I could be wrong!).

I use esure. Premiums are extremely reasonable, and their claims team are very sensible. I have managed to get my choice of dealer to do the repair, although there was a small additional excess to pay.

Esure declined to quote on mine as I'd dared to fit a 2bular exhaust and barge boards - apparently these are unacceptable modifications in their eyes.

I'm searching the market at the moment too as mine is up for renewal next week and my current insurer is playing silly beggars. Reduced the cover (lower mileage allowance and I can no longer commute, even although I work nightshift and my car would be safer sitting next to the security office in the works car park than sitting in my driveway), and at the same time hiked the premium by about 50% as they now won't mirror the NCB on my other car's policy (they did last year) and I've so far only earned 1 year's worth on the policy for the Evora.

I've just spoken with the 'pet' insurance broker from one of the Lotus forums I frequent so we'll see what they come back with in due course.

Seeing this, I thought I'd give them a try as I hadn't actually thought of them. Unfortunately, as I've only got 1 year's NCB on my current Lotus policy (they don't mirror the NCB on other policies) and the car has been modified, they have "declined to quote". Worth a try for sure, but the search continues.

UPDATE The 'pet' broker I mentioned (AIB in case you're wondering) came good with minutes to spare before the old policy lapsed.

Under-written by Markerstudy, agreed value, all mods covered on a like-for-like replacement basis, up to 14k miles/annum, commuting included, NCB mirrored from my other policy, and all for £45 less than I paid last year.

Happy chappy now!
