I know you can retrofit MY12 gear cables to earlier cars, but does anyone know if the 400 gear link mech can be retrofitted to earlier models too?

Interesting question. Is the 400 gear change markedly better than my12?

I asked Motorsports this very question a few months ago. Although it is theoretically possible, due to the considerable work involved (including new holes in the chassis), it's not practical or vaguely cost effective. So the effective answer is 'no', unfortunately.

Apparently so.

I have driven a couple of manual 400`s and to me they have hardly been slick. I will say they felt more "mechanical", but hardly any quicker. Strange, because we are lead to believe from the press that the Exige 350 has an excellent gearchange, but I have been told it is the same as the Evora 400, which would make sense? My 2014 Exige S with cables however, is excellent!
I think that things might free up with miles, and probably there are small differences from one car to another...my Exige now has 27000 miles, which might help explain things? My old Evora S was never going to be good though, even with the MY12 upgrade.

Errr update my previous comment having driven a manual 400 Saturday....the car had about 1800 miles on it and the gear change was fine...at least to the point that I did not notice it, and I am sure with more miles it will get better. My other criticisms on past threads about the 400 also seemed to have disappeared with a fee more miles on the clock...what a cracking car!

I'm around 3000 miles in to 400 ownership now, mile on mile it just gets better!

There is another possible option for series 1 cars. Alitech from Silvertone have developed a new gear change for the Elise and may be developing one for the Evora. Their Elise version is an impressive exo skeleton affair crafted in alloy but they are considering something for the Evora that fits within the Center tunnel trim.

Mated to the MY12 cables this may give a much improved change to the earlier cars.

One advantage of their Elise changer is that it is adjustable for throw and positioning.

Silverstone Lotus are talking to Alitech to help develop this option. Hopefully there will be some news in the next few months?
