Rumours rumours. They've already switched satellites and I got better reception than before the switch. Basically, the old Astra 1N satellite is now retired and will be burned up soon, and 2F will take over.Anyone know the score and what the options are ?
Plus Sky make a small fortune from customers in the South of Spain so it would be a serious ding in their profits if they were cut us off. Watch about 20% loss in revenue....not just Spain, France, Germany, etc.....
I've got Sky+HD and the only channel I can't get is Channel 5. Shock horror. Unfortunately I found it works in HD...
Everything else works perfectly including Sky Sports HD and Sky Movies HD.
So does he just need a satman to come point his dish at the new satelite ?
<edit> well now i know the new sat name and have done some googling i can see that we are in the middle of some sort of changeover and that it seems he should wait for all chanels to switch over to the new sat and then find out the most appropriate dish size should be.

No, it should just be exactly the same as before. He may however find a slightly weaker signal for some channels but they should all be largely unaffected.Any idea of his dish size? My community dish is 200cm so it's rather large so if he has something like this or similar, he should be fine.
Like I said before, it's Channel 5 that disappears which is more of a benefit than a loss.
I can't tell you about the adjustment but there is no need for change. Otherwise millions of homes would also have to be updated.
Have a Google for Astra 1N and 2F footprintts. This website also gives a good insight to what you need to receive signals.

Looking at his location for the 1N sat he should have had a 79cm or 95 cm dish. Satbeams says he should now have a 110 cm one. Sounds like i have my answer ! cheers beanbag.Have a Google for Astra 1N and 2F footprintts. This website also gives a good insight to what you need to receive signals.

Due to a recent Russian Rocket malfunction that resulted in $200 Million going up in smoke, the new satellite Astra 2E has been put on hold and is now in storage so nothing will happen until Nov/Dec 2013. It is shocking that BBC want to leave people without TV in Spain, especially as many people spend 6 months in UK & 6 Months in Spain but pay for 12 month TV licence fee. Has he got a good internet connection?
Sorry to thread hijack, but I have just bought a place in spain and it has a large satellite dish in the garden. I'm a bit thick when it comes to this sort of thing, but would I be able to bring my sky box and card from the UK and plug it in and watch Sky TV as if I were in England?

Hi Audi 321, providing the dish is pointing towards Astra 28.2 east then yes, you may need to change some settings on the box but feel free to PM me. You can use a website called dishpointer dot com enter the address of your place in Spain and then select Astra 28.2 to see the direction that your dish needs to point. Hi chimune, well it couldn't be put off forever! Astra 2E launched last week so in about 6/8 weeks it will start to broadcast channels, only then will your Dad know 100% if he can or cannot get the signals, if he has a sky+hd box there is a way to connect to internet and watch BBC and ITV via internet.Due to a recent Russian Rocket malfunction that resulted in $200 Million going up in smoke, the new satellite Astra 2E has been put on hold and is now in storage so nothing will happen until Nov/Dec 2013. Huh, run that by me again ?Are you seriously suggesting that the BBC have some sort of responsibility or obligation to provide their output to every British citizen who voluntarily chooses to depart the motherland for x months of the year simply because they have paid the licence fee ?
Logically of course you could not possibly limit that to just Spain !

I'm going to be moving to La Cala de Mijas shortly and there are a multitude of solutions to resolve the viewing problems.
I for one am not worried.
Just to let everyone know that SES Astra have made an announcement regarding Astra 2E and it now looks like nothing will happen until February 2014. This great news for many British families on the Costa del Sol that have been worried about the possible loss of UK TV in Andalucía, Granada and parts of Almeria.
Looks like most people will be switching to IPTV or using UK VPN routers to use SKY on demand.
This is the statement from SES;
As part of SES' ongoing fleet renewal programme, we will be transferring all the UK Spot Beam transponders currently operating on ASTRA 1N across to ASTRA 2E.
This move at the 28.2/28.5ºEast orbital location will take place over several weeks beginning early February 2014.
The transfer will have no adverse implications for viewers in the UK and Ireland as the affected channels will continue to operate on the same frequencies and will be broadcast at the same, or slightly improved power levels, across the UK and Ireland.
TV viewers outside the UK and Ireland may see an impact and may not be able to receive channels from ASTRA 2E UK Spot Beam, which has a smaller footprint than ASTRA 1N. The new footprint on SES' replacement fleet has been designed to meet the requirements of UK and Irish broadcasters who target their channels for distribution in the UK and/or Ireland. UK and Irish broadcasters hold broadcasting rights only for the UK and/or Ireland but not for other countries.
Thankfully for Sports fans it looks like all of the SKY premium channels will not be affected.

VPN is no problem. I highly recommend Hide My Ass or StrongVPN. The latter have EXCELLENT customer support.Your real problem is a decent ISP in Spain. Unfortunately Movistar dominate the market and are in a word...s
t.We use Satellite internet which works well when it's working but the reliability is very poor in bad weather. There are then cable options which are better but limited to built-up areas like cities.
