really surprised at the valuation though - he's much better than downing so i dont know a) why liverpool didnt go for him b) why only 10m?!

thats a mental price.
He is more of a dribbler than a crosser, and from what I can gather Kenny really wanted a winger out wide who was a keen crosser of the ball. Different style of winger for me, a very good one though and a bargain at that price. Whelan is a bit of a mug accepting that tbh.

Bit harsh calling Whelan a mug, the chap is a first class fellow & has pumped millions of his own money into wigan. He probably did not ant to stand in the players way of going on to a bigger club. No offence intended to wigan btw.

I just wish there were more chairmen like him about

Villa put in a good performance at the weekend. I still feel they need another winger, a full back and a centre mid, otherwise a few injuries could see them in trouble as the cover for these positions isn't all that great.

Agbonlahor looks good coming from the left, his passing and final ball looks to have improved . Yet to see the best of the Zog for us.

i could never really understand why MON persisted with playing Gabby down the middle, he is so obviously a wide man with his pace, he never had the technical ability to be a striker

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is not expected to play again this season after being ruled out for up to three months with ruptured ankle ligaments.
It is a huge blow to the 28-year-old's hopes of playing for England at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
Bent is unlikely to be available until the end of May, ahead of England's first game against France on 11 June.
Out for the rest of the season

shame really it was his time to shine too

£50 million losses announced today (even with £25 mil gift from Randy).

I'm not a Villa fan but it amazes me that here in Birmingham we don't have a seriously well supported and financed team.

I couldn't find an existing thread for Villa.

Looks like Alex McLeish is going to get the push. Not really worth paying the Small Heath bunch £2 million for was he.

So next man for the job?

Would Lambert go? Trouble is Villa don't seem to want to spend any money......

Considering the owner actually paid money for McLiesh (a manager who had just got Blues relegated) it's hard to predict what he will do next.

Runners and Riders:

Roberto Martinez at 7/4 (2.87)
Paul Lambert at 11/4 (3.75)
Kevin MacDonald (10/1)
Gus Poyet at 12/1 (13.0)
Alan Curbishley at 16/1 (17.0)
Rafael Benitez is an 8/1 (9.0)
Brendan Rodgers at 14/1 (15.0)

From that list I'd go for Curbishley.

He had a season at Villa as a player, I suppose.

I can't see Martinez saying yes now when he said no a year ago, when Villa were arguably in a better place than they are now. Not sure I'd want him anyway - he hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Wigan, however nice a bloke he might be.

Benitez wouldn't take the job without guarantees of a pot of money to spend on second-rate continental nobodies, so not much chance of him.

Can't see Kevin MacDonald wanting the hot seat now either, when he turned it down after MO'N left. Lord knows the job would be twice as hard now.

I see Lambert is the early favourite. We could do a lot worse than him, I suppose.

Just please PLEASE not another City reject in the form of Steve Bruce!

I wouldn't mind seeing what Roberto di Matteo could do, if Abramovich is stupid enough to let him go after the Champions League final.

Oh dear what a shame. Our cast off couldn't cope with the 'pressure' of VIlla Park. Did he honestly expect VIlla fans to accept an ex Bham City manager?

He was a fool if he did just like BCFC fans wouldn't welcome an ex Villa manager. Cant say I was sorry to see him leave St Andrews last year.

This is my theory,

Randy needed to cut the wage Bill, AVFC's believe it or not was one of the largest in the premier league, there was 800 paid staff.

So to deflect the flak he would get for a poor season forced by reducing the wage bill, he employs Big Eck knowing that all the flack will be aimed at him and not the board.
Complete Success, wage bill down, crap player on high wages got rid of, not a bad word aimed at the board and the fans get what they always wanted, big eck sacked.

New season arrives, Martinez at the helm with money to spend

anyone want to bet against it!!!!
