Do you think almost ending up in the Championship was all part of the plan?

Not at all, it was a risk that just paid off, if Stylian had been diagnosed earlier then we would almost certainly be playing championship football next season

[quote=fatboy69]Oh dear what a shame. Our cast off couldn't cope with the 'pressure' of VIlla Park. Did he honestly expect VIlla fans to accept an ex Bham City manager?

He was a fool if he did just like BCFC fans wouldn't welcome an ex Villa manager. Cant say I was sorry to see him leave St Andrews last year.

hmm..... like and ex manager called saunders ?

I could live with that - he's young and ambitious, and turned things around at Molde.

Not sure how much to read into the reports that he had an initial discussions with Lerner but it has so far gone no further. I'm sure RL will be taking note of the fact that this particular rumour is approved of by the fans!

Not Ole after all! Main sponsor has threatened to withdraw funding if he leaves...

has apparently spent a fair whack compared to their league standard in getting that turned around though

Not before time.

It was a shame to see Carlos Cuellar and Brad Guzan go. I can understand the latter - he wants first team football - but was it just money that meant Cuellar didn't get offered a new contract? It's not like he had a bad season on the pitch.

I'm not a Villa fan I just keep an eye on them as many of my friends are and I attend a few games a season (nice and easy to get tickets at Villa Park).

It just feels to me that Lambert is being selected for the job on the back of one season, rather than a decent track record (what's the physiological term where recent events are given more weight in a decision making process). Last seaon Coyle was a top manager after finishing 8th, this season he's useless before that it was McLeish after finishing 8th with Blues.

I'd have preferred to have tried to have gone for someone with a bigger/longer track record. Approach Everton for Moyes, wouldn't be the end of the world if he said no. Louis van gaal is available, curbishley had multiple good finishes with Charlton.

There's seems to be some fear that if you approach a manager and they don't take the job, you a club in crisis. Going for someone who doesn't have a hugely impressive CV so is likely to say yes, seems to be a cowardly way of working more focused on not denting the owners ego rather than getting someone who is best for the club in the long term.

None of that means Lambert won't be a success, just wouldn't have been my first choice.

Lambert got Norwich promoted twice and survived, nay, flourished in the prem. I make that 3 years of succuess - and you better be bloody grateful!

Lambert may have a limited track record at the highest level - which makes it a bit of a punt - but he's done well so far at Norwich. The club was expressly looking for a young and ambitious manager, which he most certainly is, rather than another go on the Premiership mediocrity merry-go-round.

For my own part as a lifelong Villa fan, I agree - appointing one of the usual suspects, like Bruce or McCarthy, would have been pointless and almost as badly-received by the fans as McDonkey was. Why would Moyes take the job? At best, it's a move sideways for him - with probably little cash available to shape the squad as he would like.

Part of me feels sorry for Norwich and its fans. It's not nice to have your club's stars lured away by bigger clubs and the promise of more money (viz Barry, Milner, Downing, Young etc) but unfortunately it's the way of the world these days. He had done as much as he was likely to be able at Norwich and was reported to be very frustrated with the strict £15K/week wage cap.

Norwich may well have shot themselves in the foot though in refusing Villa permission to talk to Lambert. If as reported his contract requires them to let him talk to another Premuership club, that puts them in breach of contract and arguably lets him leave with no compensation payable. I suspect Villa don't want to get sucked into a protracted dispute though and will end up paying something, whatever the legal rights and wrongs.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Lambert. I certainly don't regard him as the Messiah and the answer to all my footballing prayers but it's certainly more upbeat a reaction than the mixture of head-in-hands despair and ranting frustration that I endured when Mcfkwit was appointed.

Lambert was certainly in my top four realistic choices of manager, and i am certainly not disappointed, i feel desperately sorry for Norwich but welcome to the premiership ! if you do well then the vultures start flying overhead and strip you of anything any good.

I think Lambert will fit in nicely at VP and that the fans will take to him, ( by the way thats half the battle won as us Villa fans don't take fools lightly ).

All we want is a manager and a team that gives everything, we know we will not ever be a top four club but if we can get on the fringes with hard work then thats excellent

Roll on Norwich away first game ( remember Ron Atkinson )
