I've been spending too much time out of the UK, I'm starting to think the world doesn't revolve around London anymore hehe

Its an interesting alternative argument to doing away with the trasfer window altogether. Must admit I'd much rather see it all settled before a ball is kicked and then that's that for the season. A more level playing field, surely? First team squad can only have X number of players, set before the season starts.

I would rather the window shuts before the season starts but it cant because most of the big leagues in Europe kick off a few weeks after the UK. Maybe just get rid of the transfer window like it used to be as the winter window just hikes transfer prices. If transfers where allowed all year then it wouldnt make a huge difference to the big teams, as the competiton rules would still be in place, Ie cup tie rules. The only danger would be relegation teams spending above there means in March/April trying to beat the drop.

Soooo. Berahino has apparently had a transfer request 'turned down'. Now, in this day and age I say fair play to the player for putting one in. So many engineer a way out whilst keeping their so-called 'loyalty' bonus that for him to take such a step deserves credit.

What I'm surprised about is that they're even allowed to turn it down.

This.

Also, transfer fee to be paid in full, up front.
No add-ons.
No sell-on clauses.
No loans. (stop big clubs hoovering up dozens of young players and loaning them out again for years on end)
Maximum fee that can be charged by an agent. (if we really can't get rid of the parasites altogether)

Brilliant, and you may as well just make the top flight a closed shop and be done with it.

Loans, sell on clauses and spreading the transfer fee keeps half of the lower leagues in business. Plus, I'm not convinced you can do transfer fees in one go due to amortisation (not sure who makes this kind of crap up, if I were in charge I'd sack any account who tried that nonsense!).

Sad to say that I saw the major down side to football this afternoon... frown

I'm secretary of a Western League Division One side (that's the sixth level of non-league football) and we were away to Chard Town this afternoon. We went a goal behind on eight minutes and almost straight after restarting, one of our centre mids is on the end of a shocking tackle from their centre half. Brawl breaks out after our striker pushed the culprit before he in turn gets clobbered by the culprit's brother.

Ref issues a straight red for the tackle and yellows for the main two from the brawl. Sadly that was all the action there was as while this was going on, the centre mid is writhing in agony on the floor having broke his fib and tib. The first respose paramedic was pretty quick (15-20 mins) while the ambulance was nearly 50 minutes; they did great work for him re pain relief and one of the opposition players was absolute class, staying with Sam all the time.

Match is obviously abandoned, I followed the ambulance to Taunton half an hour away and stayed with him till his mum and girlfriend came down to stay with him. He's 19, starts a new job on Tuesday and has now had his season wrecked by an awful tackle.

Have to say after 40 years + as a fan and 10 years + working in football, first time I've witnessed a broken leg close up and first abandonment I've seen too. Hopefully it will be another 40 years till I see another one; it was horrible seeing a mate in pain and struggling to keep his emotions in check.

Hope your recovery is swift, Sam, we are all rooting for you pal.

Not good, easy to forget when we support such big clubs with medical support that a lot of the leagues don't. Hope he mends well.

Thanks Keyser, kind words.

The lads at our club don't get paid much, maybe £20 - £30 a game tops. They've all agreed to chuck in their wages next week to help the kid out. He's an Arsenal nut so I'm going to try to get him something from the Emirates if I can. He's a decent little player too, could reach Conference South or similar, I guess, but even if he was the same level as me, he didn't deserve the hand that Saturday August 29th 2015 dealt him.

That's really pants. At that level you play footy because you love it, surely. Why the hell would you want to go and break someone's leg? What a scumbag.

Witnessing a broken leg whilst playing was always the worst thing about playing.

Never ever saw it, mate. Didn't play at a high level but played for maybe ten years and barely saw a bad injury.

Sam is having an operation this morning to see if he needs pins put in or a metal plate. Going to stay in Taunton Hospital for a few days then come back home (Bristol) on Tuesday or Wednesday. Tweeted from his bed this morning that he's going to struggle to get the kit back to us... hehe

Flip - not sure he intended to do it but there is a line that was crossed. Going recklessly into a tackle knowing that you COULD hurt your opponent is wrong and I think that's what happened. Sure he didn't mean to break his leg but that's a consequence if your challenge is over the top. Thing is, the lad that did it will get a three game ban now which means he'll be about for possibly as little as eight days (Saturday/Tuesday/Saturday) whereas Sam won't be back for months.

The problem here is that the young man may not want to risk playing any more after what sounds like a very nasty one. I have played in 3 games where a player has broken a leg, you never get that crack noise out of your head. I suppose at this standard you have to weigh up is it worth playing for basically expenses against players that really think they are midfield enforcers because they get their name printed in a programme , i had a couple of seasons playing this kind of level but the twice a week training & the commitment needed was i felt just not worth the hassle.

Best wishes to the young chap Mart.

Yeah that punishment is disproportionate to the consequences really. And being reckles at that level is just dumb. While still abhorrent I can understand why top level players "play hard" - its a high pressure business. But not at that level.

Feel sorry for the guy...I remember one of our players getting similar when we played Kingstonian. Horrible noise as already mentioned.

I remember when I played that there was always someone coming round to sell insurance for these sorts of things. Crazily quite a few didn't take it out.

I worked for a big company so didn't have to worry about it but had a few nights in hospital in Essex when my foot ended up pointing the wrong way in an FA Trophy game.

I guess it's just something that happens when you play sports. I don't believe anyone goes out to deliberately break anything, but they definitely want to hurt people.

Mart, Hope that Sam is recovering well and that he gets to keep/start his new job. I played for a number of years on a Saturday and twice saw broken legs. The first, our midfielder was involved in the tackle and he was really shaken as he felt it was his fault. It was not, but he did not play for 6 weeks afterwards. He then agreed to go in goal for us and in the game of his return he collided with an opposition player and the other guys leg broke. Ralph was devastated and did not play again.
Hope that the breaks were clean and Sam is back playing soon.

Thanks Jiffle, more kind words. clap

That must have been really bad for your mate, Ralph. They say that lightning doesn't strike twice but one of my Predictathon-dominating twins broke both his wrists, separately, while in goal saving a shot from one of their mates. Same mate, same place, same twin, different wrist. The other lad was 11 at the time and was almost inconsolable the second time.

I'm sure he'll be back soon, I'll update the thread when we have a date. Till then, thanks for all the messages.

Football, eh?

Does anyone honestly think we are going to see any big money deadline moves?

Unless it's something that has been going on for a while I can't see a club selling someone with no time to get a replacement in. It'll have to be obscene money to sway them.

I can see a Berahino or Austin type as they've been around for a while. But the Bale type rumour I think is nonsense to try and keep fans happy in "well we tried" kind of way.

Eta: especially with the Euro leagues closing today. They don't have the time to replace.
