They haven't brought in tougher penalties though, those sanctions were always in the laws.

The referees have simply been letting players get away with what were quite clearly offences.

All the authorities are doing is making them uphold the laws, which is what they should have been doing all along. That is why I said I disagree with E24man when he talked about 'a testament to their professionalism'.

I belong to a group on Facebook designed mainly for discussion amongst referees at a lower level, we're talking Step 6 football here (that's six levels below the Football League).

As a non-ref, they allowed me to join the group as an interested bystander who is also secretary of a football club at that level. I'm constantly amazed at the level of inconsistency they display in their comments regarding red cards for offences; often exactly the same offence will happen in two different games and there will be two different punishments which to me is wrong.

That said, we cry out for consistency among our officials yet we then complain about no common sense shown by them. At times, there is a clear issue that you can't have both, especially when you have good refs and bad refs.

Not disagreeing on the inconsistency bit - its one of the maddening things you see, as a footy fan, most weeks. But the red card offences are new - it says as much in the linked article. Perhaps they are under new instruction this summer to stick to these rules and implement the new more severe ones. I hope so, or there will be no point in any of them.

Agree with that. If the law is consistently applied by all, there should be no problem. Where the law still allows individual interpretation, then I can see there will be a problem with inconsistency.

On your first point, about them being inconsistent in their comments - well no wonder we have a problem. Surely the refs should all be at least interpreting laws the same way?

As was said above, its that inconsistency that's so maddening. And what leads some (especially Arsenal fans of my acquaintance) to believe they're being victimised unfairly. Maybe these things "balance out over a season" but that's really hardly the point.

All well and good, but he'll by physically screwed by 30 and may never actually make it to the level where the serious money and other rewards kick in. Almost unfair by Celtic.

The Norwegian Messi (?) that went to Real hasn't set the world alight yet. Might still do, but inherent greed really doesn't help.

I am not sure a promotion is the right reward for his behaviour

I've heard him a few times and i don't mind him. Surely, even if you don't like him, you can't put him below Hoddle and Keown?

Yes I can.

Could you see 4 nations out of the 54 getting 4 (or even 5) CL places vs. the rest of Europe just 1 or 0 ?

Could you see 4 nations getting a very favourable and clever drawing scheme vs. the other 50 nations ?

Could you see the CL becoming so predictable you can already predict the semi-finals in august ?

Nice move UEFA.

I really like him. He's direct and forthright and not at all vanilla like most of the others. Can't stand Savage, Jenas or bloody Danny Mills either.

When you've got Hoddle and Keown around, anyone else is a welcome relief. I really don't know what I did wrong in a previous life to have to suffer Hoddle in this life.

Everyone seems to be looking for their equivalent of the Neviller & JC. Or at least one of them.

Would it be worth chancing the equivalent of James Richardson, Gabriele Marcotti, Graham Hunter and Dr Simon 'Sid' Lowe? They must be out there?

I can assure you they're not.
If the BBC got rid of Savage and John Murray they would have quite a good set-up.

1/4 of the way through the season & only 1 point separating the top 5 teams !

No wonder we all love the premier league .

Its actually more like it used to be, before the Prem was set up. For years, the Prem was a 1 or 2 horse race. At least the last few seasons there are more teams capable of winning it again, so yes its got better in that sense.
