He'll go down as the greatest of all time. No doubt about it. People say until he replicates his success with Argentina he can't be considered the greatest. after watching him play tonight ive never heard such bks.

Yes Barcelona have 10 other stars on the pitch but the fact he's able to tower above all of them in terms of talent tells you all you need to know about the genius.

He is without any doubt the worlds best player at the moment. He also wouldn't look out of place along side people like maradonna, pele and eusabio.

I don't think he is the worlds greatest yet but he has ten more years and by the time he is finished I am sure he will be.

What is he? 22, 23? Fabulous, best player in the world. Mesmerising to watch.
Grand old age of 24 - ready for the glue factory soon.

The big question is at what age do you retire? Money not an issue, so when does being a touch useful, winning more or less all you can (domestically at least) and being kicked from pillar to post become dull?

Well I imagine he'd want to lift the world cup with the rest of the penguin botherers.

I haven't watched all of his games recently, last nights performance was clearly exceptional, but hadn't he been struggling a little by his standards while Iniesta was out? Iniesta really makes that team tick. Messi is awesome when allowed to run at defenders from deep.

However, I feel that Ronaldo is playing equally as well as Messi this season. I think while you could argue Messi has been behind a lot of Barca's success over the last 4 or 5 years, thats also down to the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Dani Alves, Busquets, Valdes, having a strong core of players who play together all the time. Ronaldo seems to deliver no matter who is playing for Real Madrid, plus he's done it in England. I'm not saying Ronaldo is better, but, imo, there is very little between them...

They've make Saturday and Sunday nights a bit more entertaining...

I am going to have to disagree! For me Ronaldo goes missing in the big games, he did it at Man U and does it for Portugal. He's fine playing against the majority of the Spanish teams but against Barca he seems to go missing while Messi seems to shine.

Sorry I misread your comment, still early on a monday! Although, Barca had 10 stars on the pitch last night but only one of them scored 4.

ask Ryan Giggs and its not 38!.... Giggs took a kicking every time United played in Europe in the early nineties, went on to win everything domestically and can still influence a game....

I'm not sure I agree about going missing in big games...

he was uniteds' bes tplaye in champs league final v chelsea and was superb in the semi against arsenal....

FA cup final goals, ok V milwall but he stood up to the pressure...haw van nistelrooy got the mom was beyond most ppl.

i think you're being a tad harsh...put it this way...i'd rather he was still on our side rather than potential opponents...

Better than Ronaldo.
Granted Messi plays in a team of other superstars but you just don't see Ronaldo running past 3 or 4 players every game.
Trying to get over to Majorca next month to watch them biggrin

Fair points. I'm sure there are a lot of United fans who could come on here and relive lots of big games where Ronaldo stepped up. As I said, I wasn't saying Ronaldo is better, but when you analize their attributes together and scoring stats together, there really is very little between them...

I think the thing about Messi is that much like Maradonna he's got a very unique style....Ronaldo is obvioulsy a fantastic player too but Messi just does things that you can't imagine anyone else doing. I suppose Ronaldo is more about pace and power but Messi more about touch....both brilliant but very different....Messi is more unique IMHO.

Ordinary finish by the ickle chap this evening biggrin:

Anyone who leaves Michael Laudrup just a touch impressed (to say the least) has to have a nudge of talent.

Barca need to wrap him up int cotton wool. If he does some ligaments, or something along those lines, he'll be out for many months. And Eduardo's proof that they're not necessarily as good as before...
But for the moment at least, he's just jaw-dropping. And he's even called Lionel.

Teams should be allowed to play with 12 men when messi is playing against them.

Ridiculously talented. How the hell does he make everything look so easy? I've often been envious of people who got to watch pele and marradona play. Not anymore.
