I live about 4km from work so I'm not really saving all that much.

I've been doing the 25 mile round trip to work and back for 8 weeks now. Leave the house at 5:45 and arrive home again at 17:05.

Really enjoying it and into a nice routine now. There are some tw@ts on the road though.

Dropping fairly serious money on the bike and kit negates any saving for me.

This, my commute is 56 miles round trip, so around a tenner in fuel. With that kind of mileage, I physically can't do it everyday, not fit enough.

Then I spend more than the saving, on tyres, tubes and shiny things.

For every £1 I saved when commuting by bike, I must've spent £2 on largely unnecessary shiny things!

Resuming commuting this week, all being well. Hopefully the spend:save ratio will be slightly better.

I live 32 miles from work, but quite fancied cycling at least part of the way a couple of times per week. So last week I started to get the train to Glasgow and cycle the last 10 miles or so.

Daily cost of diesel when I commute the 64 mile round trip by car by car, about £8.

Return fare on train to Glasgow £10.70. (22 miles each way)

Bugger, this eco friendly healthy lark is actually costing me money (well it feels that way - I know I probably break even or save a few pence when you factor the other running costs in - no depreciation though as my daily car isn't worth much)

Really enjoyed it though. Love the smug satisfied feeling when I ride into the car park. Did it again today!!

A round trip saves me £4.70 in Tube fares, £2 in the morning and £2.70 in the evening. This morning I came in on my mountain bike, on knobblies, as the road bike is in for a service. It felt even better overtaking people than usual...

Massively slow and lethargic today. Think I need to drive in one day. Oh well, saved another fiver smile

To be fair, I made sure I had a decent amount of air in the tyres. I sounded like a mini army wagon on the smoother roads. Everyone has the slower days, when it feels like a pain. The way I think about is this:

In the past I had many days that I didn't really want to be bothered to train, but did. They were often the best session of the week. Now, when I can't be arsed, the above fact is usually enough to spur me on. It also continues to be true.

It's all about the man maths smile

Unsure if I save money by cycling to work but I don't really care. Wouldn't change it as I really enjoy the extra time on a bike, even if it does involve a bit of road cycling. Makes any trip in the car more special as I don't drive it for work much at all.

Surely this is the man-maths justification? I cycle so I can justify the spending on bikes biggrin Save myself about £100/month (Monthly zones 1&2 tube pass minus the few journeys I make PAYG on the tube), I still reckon I'm better off though despite the £80 coat, £60 shoes, £40 tyres, £40 lights etc etc wink

Likewise.

Also a couple of cigarettes a trip and it is actually quicker.

Very much doubt I'm anywhere near even though due to repairs, replacements and upgrades but it feels a lot better coming out of the bike shop with a bag/getting a parcel of bits through than it does topping the Oyster up.
