on what basis can you possibly appeal??
I have no idea. THe tackle was really bad, red card for sure but his reaction was qalso a red card. We will not win this one unfortunately. TwigtheWonderkid said:

Yeah no doubt about the tackle it was awful and id fully expect Barnes to get done retrospectively,
He can't be. Ref gave us a free kick, so he saw the foul. You can only take retrospective action for something the ref misses.Does the rule still apply where you can potentially get an extra game for wasting everyone's time on pointless appeals?

But maybe he saw a foul but missed the ferocity or height of it? If he sees a slightly mis-timed tackle and gives a free-kick but misses the fact it was a knee-high two-footer? Surely you could argue retrospective action can and should be taken in this case?968 said:
Yep and Hackett said it was an incompetent display of refereeing and Atkinson needs a rest.
I'm no Chelsea fan, but incompetent doesnt even reside in the same solar system! How any one could defend those challenges is beyond me and Barnes should be banned for the rest of the season. ManFromDelmonte said:

“I find it hard to believe all these people who have now come out, especially the manager using very, very strong phrases about that moment, didn’t have any reaction at all at that live moment,” said Dyche, who reported that Matic was the only person among Chelsea’s players, staff and supporters to respond furiously.
“Please look at the reaction from a bunch of expert footballers on the Chelsea side – the likes of John Terry, a real warrior and a top-class professional in my opinion; Zouma; big, strong boys; Ivanovic – right on top of this moment. José Mourinho has a similar view to me. The crowd behind me, circa 15,000. No one reacts. Live time, no one reacts, apart from Matic. My point is the referee has a chance in live speed time, and no one reacts.
“In fact when you look at the footage, when the camera pans back to José Mourinho and his assistant, they are calmly talking about what they should do.
“After the event with hindsight, with camera views, with slo-mo, now it’s brought out statements like ‘criminal tackle’. I find that hard to adjust to when live at that moment 15,000-plus people behind me, [Chelsea’s] expert staff – they are all experts in their field, including a high-quality manager – and most of all the players on the football field [do not react].”

Sean Dyche comes across so well every time he's interviewed.....he is no fool. And in this case he's very right. Chelsea appealing a card for what was blatant retaliation was just ludicrous, as a podcast I listened to yesterday pointed out....Mourinho is very good at deflecting crtiticism after the team has a bad result. Nobody is talking about how the team drew at home to a relegation battling team...he's deflected attention from that fact brilliantly.“I find it hard to believe all these people who have now come out, especially the manager using very, very strong phrases about that moment, didn’t have any reaction at all at that live moment,” said Dyche, who reported that Matic was the only person among Chelsea’s players, staff and supporters to respond furiously.

Agree with that.
What isn't quoted on here is Dyche's explanation of Barnes' tackle. He partially went into the bio-mechanics of the pendular motion of a players pass and how it would actually be quite difficult to stop your foot following through the path of the ball once you'd played it.
Interesting stuff and I hope Dyche continues being a successful manager who talks sense. He's a refreshing change to many managers.

Have you even seen the Matic one?
It wasn't even a tackle, Matic has run into his follow through.
Should've gone to SpecSavers. It wasn't even a tackle, Matic has run into his follow through.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re5c-HPPvIE 4 mins in covers the Barnes/Matic incident.
The point he makes that nobody else on the pitch, in the crowd or even Mourinho and his team react to this horror tackle at all.
Watching it again it's pretty clear Barnes had kicked the ball, was following through and Matic was late. The tackler was Matic and he was late....Barnes was actually passing the ball.

Yours (axe to grind), and the manager (hardly impartial) of the player in question? Or the vast majority of pundits & writers on the game - many of whom are ex players who certainly have no allegiance to Chelsea... Doesn't take a genius to work out which.

Watched it again and again and how anyone can possibly consider that to be a good tackle is incredible. It's horrific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re5c-HPPvIE 4 mins in covers the Barnes/Matic incident.
