Might make the title race a bit more interesting!

Not quite so good for my fantasy team though!

Worrying news, and a sad sign of the times he'd rather skip the CL and a possible PL title to jog around in some mickey mouse pub league for more money

Says more about the man than anything else. The majority of players China are signing are Brazilian and none of the Europeans that I can think of have left a club from their own country.

They've all left their home country to earn money, not titles or glory.

I'd consider these hugely inflated transfer fees as more of a worry to the integrity of the game.

It's an interesting situation. When the Sky money hit the Premiership the transfer fees went a bit crazy, then crazy again with foreign ownership coming in 10-12 years ago. Now it's China and apparently it's wrong.

I rather suspect it has something to do with the agents as well. If Costa goes to earn £570K a week, how much does his representative trouser?

Unlike Europe, China has no history of footballing achievements or prestige. At least you can say someone signing for a top European club wants to compete at a high level. Still, gotta love Communism fighting the bourgeois system huh?

So it's OK to be paid obscene amounts of money, just as long as they have a chance of getting a medal around their neck too?

60m for Luiz, 60m for Oscar and now talk of 80m for Costa? No competing clubs bidding up the prices. There are better players being transferred for far less. One common factor though...

Has a whiff of FFP subversion IMO.

We'd be better off continuing to lobby for safe standing (that will surely get the go ahead sooner rather than later) that could get our capacity up to 60K in the existing stadium.
No, it wouldn't. The safe standing zones will only accommodate roughly the same amount of people standing that it would seated.
The south terrace at Dortmund doubles in capacity when they use safe standing for matches. 2 people stand in each seat space.
With any new safe standing area you'll be lucky to see an increase of around 10-15% over the seated capacity.
Why? At Dortmund, the metal seat folds flat into the wall behind it, and 2 people stand in the space.

Be sad to see Costa go - Chelsea have always had a prize up front, they'll have to do some business before the end of the window.

Isn't winning medals the general aim of sportsmen? If you're competing against the best in your field you will receive more attention and develop your own skills. In terms of challenge it would be like Andy Murray declaring he will just be playing against local amateurs from now on. Sure he'd win all the time, but no one would be impressed

Costa did say that he had considered leaving in the summer for family reasons. I hadn't realised that the Spanish/Brazilian has a Chinese wife hehe

I thought FFP was a UEFA thing, not FIFA. So nothing to do with China.

Would be sad to see him go as he's pure entertainment as well as a good striker when he wants to be.

And it is ridiculous amounts of money, but who would turn it down in their own line of work, because you have to remember this is not a hobby/pastime/even love for the sport , it is their job of work. If someone offered to quadruple your wages tomorrow and make your job a hell of a lot easier, loyalty to present company would be last thought and the flight tickets would be booked. I do however think the agents (pimps) will control the outcome.

Why should they give any hoots for a rule that applies only to European football clubs? I've got 2 kids, having not given two hoots about China's 1 child policy.
