I imagine Johnsons pre match instruction to be

Push up, press, defend, attack, cross etc etc how can the poor sod do all that.

I would have thought that, when the full backs at attacking, others have instructions to sit back a bit to fill in, no?

I only watched the last 15 mins of the match so my view on this might be miles off...but this is forum so I'll throw my view into the mix.

Playing the way BR wants will take longer than a couple of months to implement. He will also need a transfer window or three to bring in the odd player that will suit the system.

Any game that Jamie Carragher is relied on to play the ball about and contribute to a possession oriented style, while also being able to cover for full-backs bombing on is always going to end in a bit of a disaster.

Give it time and don't expect overnight miracles.

Yep, that is why there is 2 more defensive minded cm's one moves across to cover tbh, any system out there these days rely on FB's being extra wingers..... If the team is set up right and players know their jobs it should make no difference.... We just need to remember we are implementing a whole new way of playing and sometimes will get caught out, tbh I would rather watch involved in high scoring games than low scoring games...

Over the coming months I expect us to concede less when players covering players going forward understand totally where they are suppose to be...

I cannot see anything but a win this wknd

I could imagine that being at a new club, BR would like to get his players playing in the style he wants them to play in and will concentrate on that rather than trying to get them playing in plan A, plan B and plan C all at the same time.
It cant do any good when you have inherited a team that have lost the plot and a club that has lost its way, one thing at a time and if plan A is his preferred playing style then that is what he will play.

I actually thought we were ok last night, we know that we dont have anyone who bangs them in for fun and we dont have bad defenders, just a bad defensive style.

Dang should have listened to craigMST and stayed behind the couch smile Actually from what I heard on the audio stream and have read in the press and forums, I think there are a number of positives again to take out of the game (glass half full type me)young guns stepped forward again, the likes of Stevie and Saurez coming off the bench and fighting for the shirt (unlike certain Citeh types) and never giving up makes me feel positive about the future. Granted it will be a bumpy road and sometimes a painful one, but the light is bright at the end of the tunnel.

To put last night into context the Mirror says that we had 75% of the ball and had 11 shots at goal,7 on target. Udinese managed 5 shots on goal, 3 on target from 25% possession.

Same old story - need to be more clinical.

As mentioned above, a proper defensive midfielder to screen the back 2 and cover the full backs would help too.

The main problem we had last night is, after our goal we had SO much possession, but actually had limited penetration, most of our passing we quite 'safe'.

I think this is what BR was referring to in the post match interview - that we only had ourselves to blame and that we should have, and had the opportunity to, kill the game off before they equalised.

I thought we had pretty good penetration in wide areas, particularly down the right with Johnson, but when the final ball was delivered they had lots of players in the box and we didn't have enough.

It's worth bearing in mind that the team out last night was a bit of a mish-mash of youth, experience, 1st 11 and 2nd 11 and a completely polished performance (irrespective of the score) is unlikely in those circumstances.

We really needed to win last night so we dont have to get a result in Russia, surely BR should have played the best team to get us qualified then play around with player mix and formation. Now we have to get points in a far foreign land when the easier option eluded us.

We have some great players, we have scored more goals than I thought and at times we look super smooth but I feel BR is the emperors new clothes.

Contracts mean nothing these days however it does show hes committed and i get the feeling from him anyway that he loves the club and would turn down all but incredible offers. Glad he signed a new deal.

BR has made no secret of the fact that the league is his priority. I guess he wanted his "big guns" rested to ensure we start getting points on the table from our league games.

Didn't almost all of the "big guns" play at some point last night? The fit ones anyway?

Skrtel and Agger didn't, nor did Sahin, Sterling only got 10 minutes and Gerrard and Suarez were only used for half hour.

The performance of Suso in the cup got him time on the pitch in a league game. I liked the line up last night.

Udinese are a good club/team but if we had a goal scorer we would have won last night. (The story of our season till January)

Brendan spoke after the game about our defense, he sees the problem the same as us.

And because we don't have a goal scorer we should pay even more attention to our defence. I agree that BR can see the problem. I just don't see yet what he has planned to fix it.

Stoke will be an interesting game. They're on the up after last weeks convincing display. We've had a positive win last week. Hopefully our defeat last night doesn't affect our confidence too much.

He can't do much about it until January.

I also think that he doesn't have squad at the moment, for the mythical plan 'B' that many are hankering for.

I think BR will come good given the opportunity.

I could imagine a lot of teams don't have this.
